Massive announcement could give Spurs lifeline in achieving once unthinkable goal – Opinion

The postponement of the Premier League season last week threw up more questions than answers, yet for Tottenham fans, the suspension of the league offered a huge sigh of relief.

Spurs could consider themselves as one of the few teams in Europe to benefit from the coronavirus epidemic that has plagued the news headlines over the past few weeks, with Jose Mourinho’s side seemingly handed a lifeline in the season to get their crucial players off the injury table, such as Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, and back to full fitness.

Indeed, you could argue that a sudden postponement of the Premier League season could point to signs of a Tottenham fan with two wishes left to use, and it appears that that lucky supporter has just his second one as UEFA announced yesterday via BBC Sport that EURO 2020 will be pushed back to 2021, meaning that league’s across Europe will likely be concluded this summer.

With Kane previously expected to return to fitness in time for the EUROs with England and the likes of Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko likely to be back in time for the summer, Tottenham have seemingly been handed a gift from the footballing gods, and with it, a second chance at trying to qualify for the Champions League.

Before the postponement of the Premier League season last week, Tottenham were due to play Manchester United for a game that could have had major ramifications to the race for Champions League football, and with Spurs in poor form heading into the tie, defeat could have all but confirmed the north London club’s absence from the European tournament next year.

Yet this news from UEFA has almost pushed Spurs back in with a chance to qualify for the Champions League. The break between now and the restart of the Premier League, whenever that will be, has gifted Tottenham valuable weeks for a number of their key players to return to fitness, and with The Evening Standard reporting that the squad remain in training, Mourinho is seemingly pushing the club to do the unthinkable and achieve a Champions League spot.

Tottenham’s season looked destined to be one of the worst in recent memory, yet a weird twist in fortune has seemingly placed Spurs back on track for a Champions League finish, and Mourinho is seemingly up for claiming just that.
