Levy must make daring decision as Mourinho hands Spurs eye-opening ultimatum – opinion

|

After a shock exit from the FA Cup at the hands of 20th-placed Premier League strugglers Norwich City, Tottenham’s season is essentially all but over.

Barring a miracle in Leipzig next week where Spurs must overturn a 1-0 deficit against one of the most in-form teams in Europe, Jose Mourinho’s side will be out of every cup competition, and another season of broken dreams and wasted potential will go down in the history books at Tottenham, leaving the Portuguese manager with a tough choice to make.

BBC Sport report that the former Manchester United boss has already issued Chairman Daniel Levy with an eye-opening ultimatum, where Mourinho will either focus the remainder of the season on a far-fetched Champions League dream or hope to claim some form of success in the Premier League.

For the Spurs manager, the latter choice must be the option he takes up heading into the final months of the season and hope that Levy is daring enough to support the decision.

Was Mourinho A Gamble Worth Taking?

Too Early To Judge

Absolutely Yes & He Needs Time To Prove It

No Chance, Another Error By The Board

Tottenham managed to reach the Champions League Final last season, yes, but with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son both likely out for the remainder of the campaign and the squad lacking in depth that made the European fantasy a reality last year, it is increasingly likely that this won’t be the case this time around.

Which leaves the Premier League, where Tottenham remain in the hunt for a top-four spot despite a barrage of setbacks in recent weeks, such is the nature of the English top-flight, and for Mourinho, he will be thinking that this is his best route to succeed at Spurs and to set the club up in a position where he can begin his rebuild.

Mourinho was appointed to bring silverware back to north London, and whilst it looks like he will fail in his opening season with Spurs, the footballing icon will be given a clear crack of the whip next term where he will be allowed more time to bring in his own players and offload those he deems surplus to requirements, and a top-four finish this year will be crucial to his plans.

If we concentrate on the Champions League the only prize available there is to win it, which would be impossible given the circumstances we’re in. With the Premier League, the scenario is a little different. There are more prizes – call them consolation prizes if you like – other than being Champions. There are Champions League and even Europa League places to be won. It is therefore a no-brainer that we concentrate on the Premier League. Sixth or better should be the goal.
