I’m not sure who is more Spursey – Spurs or Arsenal. Either way, one really poor team is going to qualify for the Champions League. Conte will be off whatever happens because we are a million miles away from challenging for titles. Graham Potter is the man for me. A tactically flexible coach whose teams play great football.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi folks
Not a great day at the office, we were (marginally) the worst of two bad sides today.
If we were honest Brighton were playing for a draw since the hour mark wasting time etc.
To their credit they appeared to nullify our attack but with that said we were pedestrian and lack lustre all day playing sidey sidey football from the back.
We are Still conceding from very few chances.
I don’t see Potter as some kind of tactical genius, he came, away with all the points today, good luck to him, they were the better of two poor teams.
Luckily Arse lost, hopefully this is, as bad as it gets.

  • Drdrums11 says:

Winks somehow enters the game at the 72 minute mark. We were already loosing the midfield battle and needed more creativity. Conte has been brilliant to raise Spurs ability and tactics but in this case I have no clue how this decision is made. Our odds of pulling out a win went down dramatically at that point. It was a terrible day throughout getting consistently out played on the ball and not helped at all by that move.

  • wentworth says:

Disagree Niall. I though Brighton were superb today and controlled the game. If they had had a goalscorer we would have been been well beaten. Their passing was crisp and decisive and they had Bissouma controlling the midfield. All their players gave 100%. We had zero shots on target despite having two of the best strikers in Europe.
I can never understand Conte bringing on Winks. Was he playing for a bore draw or running down the clock with sideways and backwards passing. The he brings on Bergweijn with three minutes to go which is a time wasting tactic. What happens? the extra minutes allow Brighton to score.
We have Harvey White who has been growing old for the last ten games fermenting on the bench. Surely he cannot be worse than Winks. If so, he should not be on the bench.
This game showed again our extreme lack of any quality on the bench and Conte’s inability to turn a game when we are being outplayed by a lesser team.
I do think Potter has done marvels with a limited budget. The team has a great understanding but lack firepower. Imagine Son and Kane playing for them?
It seems as no one wants 4th place. Certainly no one deserves it.
Please, please do not let Man You get it. I think Brentford or Brighton deserve it more.

  • Niall D says:

    Can’t agree WW
I feel that indeed Brighton were marginally the better team.
They did do a lot of rolling around after 60 mins and quite a lot of time, wasting.
Their goal whilst not lucky, was, a tad fortunate.
We just didn’t turn up on the day.
For me what it does show is that we don’t have the depth in our squad to change the game up.
We should’ve matched em in mid field and dropped to a back four, as that was our issue.
But we don’t have the personnel to do that.
We were too slow playing from the back with no front movement to “ping a pass” to.
It stated like a pre season friendly and Spurs couldn’t get out of that mode.
Brighton indeed had possession but in reality little bite.
    The guy Bissuma was excellent.
Should they have had a player sent off after 4 fouls IMO yes.
Kulu for a change was anonymous, Kane hasn’t scored in 4 or 5 games now and needs to get the scoring boots back on.
But hey we’re still 4th, kick up the arse needed and maybe this, will prompt us into action.
But agreed we havnt dominated “lesser” teams as much as, we should, but no shots on target no excuse.bad performance.
But Graham Potter is not the messiah.
He’s a decent manager in a small club.

  • 123spurs says:

No shots on target for a team fighting top4 scoring for fun, against a team with 1 win 7 plus games and we were at home, bottled it simple as.

  • Geofspurs says:

Must be the only game in PL history where there were no highlights to show.

After a low comes a high …. well, that’s how our season has progressed.

  • BelgianSpur says:

    Awful result, awful performance.

The only saving grace is that as pathetic as this game was, thankfully we can still count on Arsenal being just as inconsistent. It seems nobody wants to finish 4th.

We live to see another day, thanks to our rivals’ ineptitude. On to the next game.

As I said on the other thread:

For anyone talking Brighton up, they’ve obviously had 2 good results in a row but before that, Brighton had gotten 1 point from 7 games, against the likes of Norwich, Burnley, Watford and Newcastle.

Let’s maybe wait before we call Potter a genius.

On the day Brighton played well, but Brighton have had their own share of horrible results.

Before the Brighton game, a few stats were being shown, saying that Conte’s Spurs had scored more league goals than anyone since the beginning of 2022, and that Spurs had the 3rd highest points tally in the league since January, ahead of Chelsea.

I would argue that the job Conte is doing with this squad is far more impressive , and over performing a lot more, than anything Potter is doing at Brighton.

  • Geofspurs says:

I agree with you, BS. We’re not done yet but we sure like to do things the hard way. It’s debatable how ready we are for the CL even if we finish fourth …. but performances can change rapidly so, who knows?

The higher we finish on the table the more money we receive from the PL. Every little helps.

  • Geofspurs says:

I suppose ‘Spursy’ sounds slightly better than ‘Arsey’.

  • Niall D says:

Dunno Geoff Arsey sounds pretty funny to me.
BS re G Potter my thoughts exactly, they eeked out a result against us, both teams were bad, we were just worse(er), similarly they were pretty lucky against Arse.
What is currently worrying me is that for S’oton to win yesterday Foster was on top form saving around 5 shots, we on the other hand didn’t bother the Brighton keeper.
Conte has worked wonders, with this squad and if we do finish 4th or even 5th it will be a fantastic turn around since Christmas.
We do have an easier “run in” but as, Geoff says as usual we’ll go the difficult way about it.

  • block 108 spurs says:

West Ham dropped 2 points v Burnley… so we stiil have results going for us. My worry is Man utd and ronaldo, to get 4th place from us.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Well, the good news is that Man U’s next game is against Liverpool Tuesday, and Liverpool need the points.

Arsenal go away to Chelsea on Wednesday.

We could yet emerge as the big winners of the next few days without even playing a game.

  • Allan says:

Returned to the pre Conte days .
However Potter set his team up to stop us playing which is what his side managed to do and score a late winner .
As a football match it was awful and if Potter had attempted to take us on his side woul;d have lost quite badly .
However it is what it is and with West Ham s result it looks as if we might get at least a place in the second tier of European competition . Who would have thought that we would even be in this present position a month ago and in the driving seat for 4th place .
Much is down to the excellent work Conte has done with the players and I feel that this result is a blip .

  • Niall D says:

    Well said Allan
I do feel that Brighton set up to”spoil “to a degree, with that said we didn’t turn up as, an attacking force,, but they were the better of two bad teams on the day, hopefully as you say it is a blip, and we can forge ahead.
Man U as usual get a lucky win, when a draw, was on the cards.
But as you say we are in top 4 currently, maybe by our fingertips, but still there, its ours to lose, let’s hope for a change the gods actually smile on us. 🙏

  • Love totty says:

My fear all along is that without the creative force in midfield we struggle to break down a resolute defence. We have solved the breaking a high press problem but a parked bus stymies us. I had started to doubt my prediction that MU would claim the 4th spot over us or le Arse but it’s in their DNA to do it when it matters. Hope lingers but not confidence. Our GD might well swing it though.

  • jod says:

This was a dreadful game to watch. To me it was a rerun of the Wolves game. a tactically astute manager out thinking Conte, nullifying his formation and winning with inferior players. Its a reminder that having a very set way of playing has pluses and minuses. it means your players are well drilled and know exactly what they are supposed to be doing. But it also means the opposition manager also knows exactly what you are going to do and, if he’s smart enough and has the players, he can set up to frustrate you. So far only Lage and Potter have really done that but there are a couple of obvious lessons. First is a Plan B would be nice, but I just don’t think that’s in Conte’s DNA. he might tweak the formation but he won’t change it. Second is that old mantra “if you can’t win a game make sure you don’t lose it”. In both games the goals were avoidable, a nil nil draw perfectly achievable. But defensive discipline broke down and soft goals were given away, that has to stop if we ever want to compete at the top of the premier league.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. It’s more simple than that. It’s about a team that was set up to defend (park the bus), and they did it superbly. It’s happened to every club before and will happen to every club again. It’s a footballing strategy that lesser clubs use and sometimes, as in this case, it works well.

  • Niall D says:

    Afternoon Jod
There are points you make that are indeed agreeable and some which I don’t agree with.
I must admit that on Saturday we didn’t change up our side and do something to balance our midfield, as many of us have said, it does show the lack of depth in our squad that in reality we didn’t have the personnel to do that.
With that said Conte has and can change or tweak formations, but a severe lack of people for midfield, ie Dele, LoCeslo, N’Dombele, plus Skippy being injured has left us with very little to work with.
I do feel that we needed rid of those players, but to bring on the likes of Ericksen for a game like this would’ve and could’ve made a difference.
We got rid of three in that area and only brought one in.
When we did bring on subs it was really like for like, nothing to change the game, no extra striker, no playmaker in mid field.
But I do think nearer the mark was that, simply our big players didn’t show up, nothing worked for Kulu or Kane on Saturday, I feel that some in our team took the win for granted, having beaten Brighton twice this year already.
Brighton did set up to spoil and, fortunately got a goal at the death, no great tactics, they almost but didn’t quite park the bus.
I do feel having scored freely in the last 4 or 5 games our own players took this one too lightly.
With that said well done to Brighton, they worked hard, they were the better team on the day.
But we can be guilty of giving away soft goals, but I do feel this one was a bit of a “pinball” goal bouncing off Well beck then twice off Romero which wrong footed Dier.
Well just have to re group for next week.

  • TK says:

Going from four or five goals per match to no shots on goal? Ouch. We were a mid table mess until Doherty found his role, then he got injured and we’re a mid table mess again? Say it ain’t so. No shots on goal? WTF?

I’s like to see what Conte can do if he’s able top bring in three or four players of his chosing and get a full training in before next season starts. If he doesn’t get that chance because DL is too too tight, then Poch should be available. He’s not going to last at PSG. But if DL won’t dosh for a couple of decent lads for Conte, he won’t for Poch either.

I like the way Conte wants to widen the pitch and create more space for movement. But he’s a yard short on talent right now.
