With Tottenham Hotspur taking Southampton to a replay in our FA Cup fourth round clash on Saturday, one big story that came from the game was the omission of Christian Eriksen from the matchday squad and plenty were quick to tie it to the ongoing speculation about Inter Milan’s interest in the player.
The 27-year-old Danish international saw the rumour mill spike this month with rumours of a potential £20million all in bid for the soon to be out of contract star, and with personal terms reportedly already agreed, it was simply a matter of agreeing to a free to avoid him signing a pre-contract with them and moving for nothing next summer.
With Inter already on the record through sporting director Piero Ausilio as per the above link, Mourinho took his opportunity to speak once again and the BBC quote him as being significantly unhappy with the timing of their interest.
“Tottenham is the last one to blame for this situation. I just want to say that this situation shouldn’t happen on 25 January. The only thing I can say is Eriksen, since I arrive, he is behaving in a very, very professional way, with me and the team. But to be on 25 January in a situation like this is not nice.”
There will be those who agree with Mourinho here, there will certainly be others who think it’s a trite response given this is exactly how all transfer windows tend to work with clubs looking for the best deal for them – and certainly, Spurs and Daniel Levy know this tactic well as we are all aware.
There will also be those who believe this situation is of our own making, but whatever side of the fence you might sit here, at least the saga appears to be at an end and we can move forward with at least one players’ future sorted.
