Former Tottenham Hotspur and current Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric was crowned the FIFA Best Male Player of the Year at their ceremony last night.
Across four seasons at White Hart Lane the Croatian international made 159 appearances for us and despite flopping in his first year at the Bernabeu, he’s back on an upward curve and his quality was apparent for all to see at this summer’s World Cup out in Russia.
With plenty of fans still wishing he hadn’t moved on back in 2012, Spurs were quick to pass on their congratulations to our former player after watching him lift the gong.
Luka Modric ???????????? I, like many Spurs fans, feel like a proud parent ???? #Yido

From the 1st game Luka Modric played for Spurs, you knew he was talented. Happy for him!

Great to see Luka Modric win the Ballon D’Or. Never imagined he’d be the one to break the Messi/Ronaldo duopoly. Great little player who has been excellent since his Spurs days and really wanted United to sign him before he went to Madrid. Kudos @lukamodric10

Huge Luka Modric fan since his Spurs days, but you don't just stop when he moves club (especially when it's to a team outside the Premier League). So happy for him. All time legend and World Player of the Year.

Pleased for Luka Modric. Best midfielder I’ve ever seen play for Spurs during his time with us. #FIFABest

Luka Modric was the flop of the season when he joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur, but today he is the best player in the world. The beginning may be rough for you too, keep your head up high, work hard, don't give up, you will end up as a winner.

With FIFA restarting their own awards ceremony after partnering with the Ballon d’Or for a number of years, Modric becomes the first player since 2007 to break the Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo run of lifting the trophy as they have shared it between them for the last few years.
Nice to see FIFA realise that other players actually exist.
