Keeper Pierluigi Gollini signs for Spurs from Atalanta on loan

|

Spurs have officially completed the signing of Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, who has signed on an initial one-season loan with the option for a permanent transfer at the end of the campaign.

However, the deal will become a permanent one anyway should the Italian play a certain number of games for the club, with Nuno likely to play him in all of the cup games.

Hugo Lloris will remain the number one for the next season, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season, the move is a smart one with Gollini more than capable of being his successor.

Gollini’s previous clubs include Manchester United, where he spent time in their youth academy before returning to Italy, and Aston Villa for whom he made 20 appearances in the Championship before joining Atalanta.

The 26-year-old keeper’s arrival has effectively ended Joe Hart’s Spurs career, with the former England international keeper now being told he is not apart of Nuno’s plans and he is free to talk to other clubs.

Meanwhile, Gollini is also an international keeper, but unfortunately for him wasn’t selected to represent Italy in their fantastic 2020 European Championships winning campaign this summer.

He follows in the footsteps of compatriot Carlo Cudicini, who also played in goal for Spurs between 2009 and 2012 under Harry Redknapp.

Chances to impress for the new signing will come in the form of League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League matches this season – but if Lloris gets injured then he will be the first person called upon to replace him.

Gollini may also be joined at the club by his former teammate Cristian Romero, who is edging ever closer to a spectacular transfer to Spurs in a deal masterminded by Fabio Paratici.
