REPORT: Ajax want to sign Spurs winger Bergwijn

|

Steven Bergwijn’s time at Spurs hasn’t exactly gone to plan, despite his electrifying start at the club in which he scored a debut goal against Manchester City at home in front of the fans.

He went on to score two more goals in his first season at the club, including a brilliant solo strike against Manchester United, but after only netting one goal in 35 appearances last season – his development has seemingly halted, and the club could cash in this Summer.

Dutch giants Ajax are reportedly extremely interested in taking Bergwijn back to Holland, where he made a name for himself at rival club PSV Eindhoven, scoring 29 goals in 112 league appearances.

The forward missed out on a place with his national team squad for the European Championships this Summer, and having only made 12 appearances with his country, scoring just one goal, he could be open to leaving Spurs in order to get his career back on track and break back into the Netherlands team.

A Dutch journalist called Mike Verweij has today reported too that Ajax will up their attempts in the coming weeks to sign the 23-year-old, and they will be in a much better place financially to afford him after selling Edson Alvarez to Rennes in a deal they hope to conclude very shortly.

Spurs are likely to demand at least £25 million for the player, who many at the club still believe can go on to become a key part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans moving forward.

Impressing in pre-season will put him in good stead on that front if he does want to stay at Spurs and fight for a place in the first team, and after looking much sharper, much more composed and much more confident on Wednesday against Colchester United, things are beginning to look up for those who want Bergwijn to stay and become an important player for the club.

However, the imminent signing of Bryan Gil from Sevilla will definitely ensure that a starting spot in the team will not be guaranteed, and both players will have to fight for their place in the team.
