Harry Cracks 200 As Spurs Get Mourinho His First St James’ Park Win – Match Stats

|

Having taken a North London derby victory over Arsenal to boost everyone’s spirits, Tottenham Hotspur were back in action this evening as we made the long trip up north to face Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side.

Newcastle have had a mixed season again, but with back to back losses in recent matches, we could understandably expect some kind of a reaction.

And we got one, Newcastle started the far brighter, had more possession and created far more chances than we did, but just ahead of the half hour mark, Son Heung-Min gave us the advantage and we went into the break one goal to the good.

We were a bit more with it in the second half, but Newcastle still dominated chances and in the 56th minute they made it count as they hit the equaliser. It was a bright response though and Harry Kane had us 2-1 in front four minutes later as we reestablished our lead.

Although the hosts continued to dominate, Kane completed his brace in the 90th minute to tie the game and the points up for us.

3-1 – it might not have been pretty, but it’s another win. Up to seventh and Harry passes 200!

Geof – if you look back at that specific post again – as RCB’s I have Toby and Davy (Davinson Sanchez) so I agree defo keep Davy indeed for me at the moment Toby and Davy are our 1st team CB’s even more so next season barring some spectacular signing in the summer. Of course there’ll be need for rotation so that’s where Dier and a new CB would come in. This is of course assuming that Vert’s is leaving and that Tanganga might probably be used as a RB. Furthermore that Foyth and CCV get sold.

All hypothetical of course until JM acts this summer and beyond, etc!

    Hope this helps mate!

  • El Jefe says:

BS – yes I saw that report aswell – fully agreed – let’s get talking to them and maybe do something with KWP going the other way – hopefully we can wrap it up ASAP – not the usual dragathon that Levy loves doing LOL!

  • El Jefe says:

BS – LOL – too right footy boots indeed!

  • Geofspurs says:

    BS …. You’re a good dad!!

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. Got it. Thanks for solving my confusion, mate.

Last nights result of the Leicester v SU went our way, now on Sunday we have to capitalise on it, normally in the past when things will benefit ourselves we tend to mess it up, have we changed under JM, maybe! so I suppose we will have to wait and see.

For me a boring/boring game as long as we get the 3 points will do, though over the past 2 games a little bit more is starting to show, bit by bit/slowly advancing in game play seems to be the recipe. COYS

El Jefe – not sure what “higher ceiling” actually means. They are both unproven in the premier league, neither has set the world on fire in Europe. There’s this insane optimism when it comes to signings among some supporters. Every player someone else has is deemed to be better than every player we have, every signing will work out. You can contrast it with Liverpool’s moneyball approach where they crunch the numbers and evaluate players scientifically.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Spurs players are gradually changing their mindset from poch to Jose’s tactical methods. Perhaps we will see this more over the next season. So as I have said previously we will be a better team, and more mentally stronger to see out games when ref. / var decisions and goals go against us. Which we will need in PL / Europa League (hopefully)

I would not be surprised by this, and those who say boring football by jose will be surprised, as I can see he has changed his ways a bit since Man Utd days, and has a young and highly rated asst. manager to help him. So as we have a manager who has won trophies, he should be given time to settle in after the way he was appointed / inherited a demoralised team in Nov. 2019 and prove his ability again.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. I can’t help thinking that some of the players some fans want to sell would be required transfer targets for us if they played for another club.

  • Niall D says:

Geof I suppose there is always someone wanted by another club. Sometimes they lift their game with another team or the team formation suits them. Look at KWP at Soton he has either lifted his game or the team suits him, or, he is a better player in an average.
With Southampton in mind and transfers. They Raided Celtic and at the time took Wanyama and Van Dyk.
Why can’t we do the same. There is a big unit CB called Adjer and a big guy up front Eduard.
They have good European experience. They are winners. Even tho its a lesser league. But its still experience in finals, cup winning etc..
We could pick em up for decent money.
    Only a thought…

  • Geofspurs says:

ND …. Yes, I know what you mean and agree with you. My point was that we have a pretty decent squad already and improving it to the standard we would all like, ie, a team of Messi-like world beaters, would be cost prohibitive. There are areas we could improve on but if our squad could reach its maximum potential and play as a well balanced team I doubt that we would need anyone. Can Jose achieve this? The jury is still out.

  • jod says:

Niall D – Klopp paid £75m for Van Dyk because he believed he was the best defender in Europe. That’s spending money for someone special. There’s a big difference between that and signing fairly ordinary players because you feel you need to sign someone. Either a player must be significantly better than you already have or he must give you something you don’t have in your current squad which you think is important or he must reinforce a position you think is weak (why I like Ake). The only other category is a young player you think you can make a much better player (the Dortmund approach). “He’s not a bad player, let’s sign him” just doesn’t work if you actually want to improve your squad.

  • PompeyYid says:

Got a couple of apparently good tip offs or more rumour, am not sure which…

Kim Min-Jae is flying into London to complete his transfer to us, 24 yr old CB, Son recco’d him.

Deal nearly done for swap deal of KWP for Hojbjerg, don’t mind Hojbjerg coming but would like to keep KWP.

Anyone heard anything regards this lot. COYS

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

Here”s a thought. Højbjerg could do for us what Van Dyke did for Liverpool. strengthening the defence to allow N’Domele and Lo Celso to provide the creative sparks in central midfield. With Son. Harry and Lucas/Bergwijn up front to match Liverpool’s front free format and a class attacking full back we could become the new Liverpool. Well, we all have our dreams!

  • block 108 spurs says:

Spurs fans have been dreaming for many years of wining the PL/CL we were so close on both with poch. As an eternal optimist spurs supporter 50 yrs + … I’m agreeing with Stan… still dreaming lol….COYS

  • El Jefe says:

Jod – I see where you are coming from but surely you must see where I am coming from as regards Aurier – how many more mistakes in defence especially and poor crosses in attack generally must we tolerate before we decide to get rid off – people are being way too forgiving for my liking! Trippier was got rid off last summer after a poor season filled with mistakes and that was even bearing in mind that overall he had been a positive for us with his play and only cost us £3.5m. Aurier cost £23m and has certainly not been positive overall in my eyes and he’s now 27 and would need a new contract also within the next 12 months – possibly on more money than the other targets mentioned would want/get!

As for higher ceiling – we’ve seen what Aurier can do and I don’t rate that very highly, these other 2 are still potential diamond’s in the rough (24 and 20) so that was what I meant – I think both have great potential – if it gets realised all the better – hopefully 1 will do it with us – for me probably now for reason’s explained it would be Castagne! He has been brilliant by all account’s for Atalanta and has also forced his way into the Belgium team even with Meunier there so I think he’s definitely got to be of interest. I wonder what BS makes of him?!

  • Niall D says:

Jod whilst I agree with your assertion. Unfortunately we (the owners) don’t seem to have the mind set to bring a ready made Premiership player. It seems we’d rather buy French league flops and make do.
    Need proof
    N’Je
    Aurier
    NKoudu
    Benteleb
    N’Dombele?
I think I was among the first to mention Ake as a possibility in June. However time will tell
I must agree with EJ on this much as I’d love to find the complete RB, LCB, LB, DCM, and CF unfortunately we can’t spend £75000000 on each one.

  • El Jefe says:

Have to be honest – height aside – I’d love to get Ake – who wouldn’t – but I seriously doubt it as he’s going to cost £40m+ (not that expensive given his talent but please read on…….) and apparently the likes of CL club’s like Man City, Chelski and Man Utd (who I believe will get the final spot) are going to be in for him – so we have 0 chance of getting him quite frankly! Also as regards cost – can anyone really see us spending £40m+ on 1 player this summer – again I don’t think so – look at who were being linked with regularly – all £25m tops and below! Hojbjerg for around £20-25m as is now being reported and not the £30-35m originally quoted! Castagne maybe £15-20m (think even Aarons at £25-30m minimum is probably out of reach also). Kim Min Jae around £13-15m. Even Muriqi at £13-15m.

As fans we have a right to dream but it’s much better to just be realistic and realise we are in a lot of trouble financially and will be lucky to get some deals done this summer no matter how much they may be needed!

For me we blatantly need a RB as Aurier isn’t good enough, a CB ideally a LCB with Vert’s likely leaving, a proper DMC as we don’t currently have one and IMHO desperately need one and a back-up STR to HK10 to share the workload up front! 4 signings in 1 summer is actually quite a lot and will require at minimum a decent outlay – nowhere near ideal given our current financial predicament but we’ve got around 6 players for me who we can sell on and build a small kitty which would help immensely!

Anyway let’s wait and see what happens but that’s my take on it and what I would like/realistically hope for and can possibly see happening!

EJ… Amarguinha, is that the almond liquer that’s like drinking liquid marzipan? I have fond memories of a number of family holidays on the Algarve in the early/mid eighties, I remember we were alwas given a shot after a meal in the local restaurants. Yummy, so much so I always brought a bottle back with me!

  • El Jefe says:

HI TQ – I have to be honest and say that where my mum comes from up norf lol – no Amarguinha just Aguardente LOL! But yes it’s an almond liqueur as far as I know but never tried it – never even tried Licor Beirao which is the most famous liqueur of Portugal – similar to Licor 43 in Spain! Never was a big drinker but certainly drunk Aguardente in the past – woof – heavy duty stuff – no wonder it’s the main stay of up norf especially back in the day during winter – warm the cockles LOL! Naturally as a decent Portugeeza would also recommend a good Vinho do Porto to you!

Anyway keep well my friend and take care as we are still not fully out of this hell hole just yet!
