Harry Cracks 200 As Spurs Get Mourinho His First St James’ Park Win – Match Stats

|

Having taken a North London derby victory over Arsenal to boost everyone’s spirits, Tottenham Hotspur were back in action this evening as we made the long trip up north to face Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side.

Newcastle have had a mixed season again, but with back to back losses in recent matches, we could understandably expect some kind of a reaction.

And we got one, Newcastle started the far brighter, had more possession and created far more chances than we did, but just ahead of the half hour mark, Son Heung-Min gave us the advantage and we went into the break one goal to the good.

We were a bit more with it in the second half, but Newcastle still dominated chances and in the 56th minute they made it count as they hit the equaliser. It was a bright response though and Harry Kane had us 2-1 in front four minutes later as we reestablished our lead.

Although the hosts continued to dominate, Kane completed his brace in the 90th minute to tie the game and the points up for us.

3-1 – it might not have been pretty, but it’s another win. Up to seventh and Harry passes 200!

Unused Newcastle Subs:

Muto, Manquillo, Darlow, Atsu, Allan, Young.

Unused Spurs Subs:

Sessegnon, Gazzaniga, Skipp, Gedson Fernandes, Tanganga, White.

HT …. Cheers for the PL start date. I’m looking forward to next season more than I was looking forward to the end of this one. Mind you, whether it starts or not is all in the sticky hands of the virus!

Obviously I agree with you that the most successful teams have the majority of possession. I think my comment related to the success park-the-bus clubs (a refined skill) enjoy at times. I just meant that Possession does not always guarantee a result, more so now than in previous decades. Have to say I prefer Spurs to play a possession game (hopefully going forward, rather than a waiting game and relying on a fast break. Then again, I think we have the players to do both.

  • Niall D says:

EJ you must be on the Amerguinha. I suggested either Ake or Mings during our discussion after the W/Ham game. You alluded to his height even then. And possible high cost Lol. Good player tho..
Not that keen on Mings now.
CDM Hojberg definately looks a good prospect.
Danny good to see the site running more efficiently cheers.

  • El Jefe says:

ND so I was involved in that discussion then lol – thought I might have been but could not remember for sure -good to see I’m constant if nothing else for example regarding availability, cost and Ake’s height lol! I did say around that time also I was not really fond of Mings although it was a fair shout especially on a tight budget! Hojbjerg let’s wait and see what happens – hope he is the answer as we desperately need a proper DMC in the middle there.

Amarguinha – more like Aguardente lol – no I’m teetotal to be honest – coke zero for me lol!

  • Niall D says:

Like both of those (in small quantities). Lol. Can’t wait to see what the Transfer window brings. CDM and RB urgently needed.

  • El Jefe says:

Agreed ND – can’t wait to see what the transfer window brings (enjoy the Amarguinha but take it easy on the Aguardente BTW LOL!). I might go further than just DCM and RB desperately needed – with Vert’s likely off we have no left footed CB and thus a LCB is also desperately needed and one might add that it’s the same with regards to another striker to cover HK10!

Sell: Aurier, Rose, Foyth, KWP, CCV and Amos.

GK – Lloris and Gazzanigga and possibly Whiteman.

    RB – ? and Tanganga.

    RCB – Toby and Davy.

    LCB – ? and Dier.

LB – Davies and hopefully Sessegnon.

DMC – ? and Winks and Skipp.

2nd MC – Sissoko and N’Dombele and Fernandes.

ACM – Dele and Lo Celso.

    RW – Moura and Lamela.

    LW – Son and Bergwijn.

    STR – HK10 and ? and Parrott.

We need atleast 4 signings for me.

I’m starting to veer away from Aarons and starting to like Castagne at RB – he’s more experienced including already being a full Belgian international (form a nice partnership on the right of defence with Toby), taller and will be cheaper – possibly nearly half of what Aarons might cost. I would love to have Aarons and Sessegnon potentially for the long term bombing up and down like Walker and Rose used to but as money is tight, we need to start motoring next season straight away but also keeping it tight at the back – Castagne is probably the better option right now. Like the fact he’s 6ft1 with Davies 5ft11 – good solid defender’s at full-back which will invariably help to keep us clean sheets. He also wants to come and only has 1 year left on his contract – potential bargain maybe for around £15-20m or so as opposed to having to fork out £25-30m atleast for Aarons and ending up with a similar situation to Sessegnon possibly – not ready for a top 4 challenge, etc! For potential on the right we already have possibly Tanganga who is both relatively tall at 6ft and very fast.

At LCB – well Vert’s is likely off and the strongest links this week are with Kim Min Jae who is – primarily right footed lol but apparently is decent with his left peg also. Again with money tight he could be an interesting option at the touted £13-15m. Only 23, 6ft3 and supposedly quick – he’s got 30 caps for South Korea so that is actually decent international experience all be it probably much of the time against weak opposition! Supposedly very commanding of the area especially high balls and decent on the deck too – sounds interesting for sure – I’m sure JM knows what he’s doing if he decides to take a punt!

At DMC – Hojbjerg seems to be the most likely and for around £25m (as quoted regarding an Everton supposed bid but apparently and luckily he wants to come to us) I think he’s worthwhile especially as he’s got quite a bit of Prem experience including being a captain, full Danish international also, is a good height at 6ft1 and is generally well rounded ability wise.

Finally at Str – we’d have to look around and see what’s what – the Kosovan in Turkey Muriqi could actually be interesting for around the now quoted £13-15m! Similar to Llorente at 6ft4 and has scored regularly in Turkey and even for Kosovo (avg 1 in 3 with 8 goals in 23 games). Still only 26 so again I’d trust JM if he decided to go for it.

Let’s wait and see – none are ground breaking exciting superstars but they could prove to be solid signings – and seeing as money is tight you take what you can afford and move with it!

  • El Jefe says:

To be perfectly fair – if we bought Castagne and Hojbjerg and put them straight into the 1st team where they are desperately needed, I’d be willing to take punts on the likes of Kim Min Jae and Muriqi (in Muriqi’s case Burnley were after him recently but he turned them down lol) for the squad generally!

Like I said and ND also – looking forward to what the summer brings and my expectation’s are actually very reasonable as can be seen – I fully trust JM – just like in his Porto days – dealing on a tight budget – time to show what he’s worth again!

Wonder what we’ll get for the 6 on my sell list aswell:

    Aurier – £15-20m.
    Rose – £5-10m.
    Foyth – £10-15m.
    KWP – £10-15m.
    CCV – £5m.
    Amos – £5m.

Pretty conservative I think and at a minimum around £50m so it gives us something to play with! Not that much more would be needed to get the 4 mentioned in for example!

Just playing about a bit for argument’s sake – let’s see what happens lol!

  • El Jefe says:

Just realised if we were to get this Muriqi character – he’d be similar to Llorente, Carroll, Crouch lol – despite what I said earlier for which there was a reason – no CB really likes playing against this type especially aerially so might indeed be worth a look especially when we’ve now got so many wingers and looking to play with 2 fast wide players in attack – focal point in the middle for them, target man, etc! We’ll see and soon enough find out……! We were talking of mixing it up and having different tactics only yesterday lol……!

Hmm Pompey where’s that famous tin hat you’re always banging on about when you think you’ve done wrong lol?!

  • El Jefe says:

Just reading some great news as regards Leicester – no Ricardo, no Soyuncu, no Fuchs, no Chillwell, no Maddison, even possibly no Albrighton – fcuking brilliant – bring them on lol! On top they had to play yesterday so we’ve got 24 hours on them aswell although I guess we’ve also had to play 4 games in some 10 days up until and including Wednesday so all the help we can get is needed and greatfully accepted lol!

Looking forward to it a bit more now as was quite worried given how good they have been this season and with us having to win to keep up the chase for a EL spot!

  • El Jefe says:

BBC update on Hojbjerg to Everton – offer only £14m plus add ons – would indeed love that – has to be a bargain surely?! Hopefully we can make it happen! Straight enough swap for KWP even LOL!

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. Where does Sanchez fit on your list?

  • El Jefe says:

Morning Geof, I’ve got Toby and Davy as RCB’s which is what they are but they are arguably our 2 best and most experienced CB’s especially going forwards and with Vert’s likely leaving so they would probably have to be my starter’s for next season unless by some miracle we buy a top LCB which I very much doubt and even still everyone has to earn their place – I mean look at N’Dom and even Sess this season – big money transfers aren’t no guarantee of anything unfortunately! Hope that answer’s your question my man lol!

  • El Jefe says:

    Lloris

    Castagne Davy Toby Davies

    Hojbjerg Sissoko

    Lo Celso Dele Sonny

    HK10

As I’ve stated for a while now want to see Dele and Lo Celso in the same team. Lo Celso last year for Argentina in the Copa America played the same position as I’ve put him in above but then with the fluidity of the likes of all 3 of them – they would constantly be changing and swapping around so no real problem!

Winks and N’Dom would have to fight Hoj and Siss respectively for 1st team.

Would love to see N’Dom and Sess especially take over 1st team though that’s for sure, keeping Davies and Siss on their toes – same goes for Tanganga with Castagne, etc!

But let’s wait and see what happens anyway…….!

  • BelgianSpur says:

HT – “To me, that’s like saying just bread and water will keep you alive and so that is all you need…….. It’s true.”

I think that we need to remember how low we’d sunk. Before we aim to play affective AND attractive football, we need to prove that we can play just effective football.

It’s like teaching a toddler the basics about food. You start him/her off on milk, which is unexciting, because that’s the only thing he/she can handle in the beginning. Over time you introduce new things as the child develops.

That’s how I see it anyways. Before we start playing dominating football, I would want to see the team prove that they can consistently keep a clean sheet, consistently create chances, consistently play mistake free football etc.

And we haven’t shown that, consistently, in many months.

    The fancy stuff comes later.

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. I asked about Sanchez because he wasn’t included in your list of those to play or those to sell? I think he’s one to keep.

Has this site been healed? It seems so.

  • Geofspurs says:

BS …. Forget about milk; I think we should start toddlers off by kicking a ball around (basic skills first) : – )

  • block 108 spurs says:

I did see that Ben Davies said… Jose has a tactical game plan for every opponent so spurs play different ways. Whereas under poch we always played the same way regardless of opponents. a High pressing tactical.. which we have all commented upon over the years, and witnessed nil silverware won. He also said we were good enough to get to semi finals / final / PL top 2 & 3 but did not win, as were were outplayed by chelsea and Leicester in those PL / cup games.

I noticed we have played 442 /4411 and 433 and 4231. In different half of the games recently. So the results have been better… According to Ben, the players are with Jose on this, and respect his record of winning all there is to win in club football. COYS

DW… yes the site has improved, instant post there. 🙂

  • BelgianSpur says:

EJ – Everton have just approached Southampton to buy Hojbjerg: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/53436848

The article does say that we may yet get involved, but that Everton have acted first and it’s definitely time to get talks underway if he’s a serious target.

Geof – I was told that kids should be given a chance to pick their sport themselves, and that parents should avoid influencing the decision… Meanwhile, on a completely unrelated note, I have been looking for football boots for a 15 month old.

    • PompeyYid says:

BS….very good post, did make me smile, I was like you as a young Dad getting football boots for my 3 boys, though it turned out all 3 became Black Belts/Danns in 3 different Martial Arts, 1 is a personal trainer by trade, 1 is a self employed plasterer and the last one is in the Armed Forces, the only one to follow in Dads footsteps, though all 3 are avid Spurs fans they do not play the game.

Keep being a good Daddy! COYS
