Explained: Tottenham exit couldn’t have gone worse for 22-year-old

|

John Onomah left Tottenham and joined Fulham on a three-year deal over the summer, but his move to Craven Cottage hasn’t quite gone to plan.

The 22-year-old has made just three appearances in all competitions for Fulham, racking up only 98 minutes of football this season, and already finds himself on the periphery under Scott Parker – Tom Cairney and Bobby Reid are ahead of Onomah in the pecking order.

The attacking-midfielder spent the first three weeks of his Fulham career sidelined due to a lack of match fitness, missing the Cottagers’ 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers (August 10), 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town (August 16), 4-0 win over Millwall (August 21) and 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest (August 24).

He made his debut against Southampton (August 27) in the EFL Cup but was on the losing team. Onomah has since been in the matchday squad on a regular basis but has been reduced to cameo appearances from the bench.

The England u21 international was an unused substitute in a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City (August 30), was given five minutes in a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion (September 14), was an unused substitute in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday (September 21) and was given three minutes in a 2-0 win over Wigan on Friday – eight minutes of Championship football.

It’s hard to see Onomah getting playing time over Cairney or Reid, so he might be short of playing time this season. Time will tell.
