Collapse could see Tottenham fall back into embarrassing second-grade competition – Opinion

Things just haven’t been the same since that incredible night in Amsterdam, and the situation at Tottenham this season seems to be deteriorating.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side currently sits ninth in the Premier League table after eight games, trailing the behind the likes of West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace, and the long-term injury to number one keeper and Hugo Lloris in Spurs’ 3-0 defeat to Brighton has made the north London club’s problems even more complicated.

Indeed, Tottenham have a fantastic chance to get things back on track when Watford makes the short trip to N7, with the Hornets yet to win a game all season and only managing four goals in their opening eight matches, with two of them coming against Arsenal in one of their three draws this campaign as the Premier League table shows.

On paper, it looks like a sure-fire win for Spurs, yet the same was also said before the match against Newcastle United at the start of the season, who too were winless before arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and surprisingly claiming a 1-0 win.

If the Premier League has taught us anything this season, is that it is unpredictable, and Tottenham failing to win again this weekend could realistically doom Pochettino’s side to UEFA’s second-tier club tournament the Europa League, potentially replacing Arsenal in the competition after a few years of Lilywhite supporters mocking the Gunners for dropping into in recent seasons.

With Liverpool coming up in the league after Watford, who have currently won every league game this season, beating the likes of the aforementioned Arsenal as well as Chelsea, Tottenham could find themselves in a dangerous position in the table if three points against the worst side in the division don’t materialise this afternoon, and Pochettino will find himself in a new plain of pressure and criticism that he is yet to experience whilst in the hot seat for the north London club.
