Chelsea and Manchester United to rival Spurs for Brentford man’s signature

|

Hugo Lloris’ performance in the NLD was yet another sign that it is time for Spurs to move on from the Frenchman (more on that here).

The Spurs hierarchy seemed to have recognised this as the Lilywhites have reportedly drawn up a shortlist of goalkeepers to replace Lloris and Brentford goalkeeper David Raya is one of the names on that list (according to 90min).

Raya is said to be looking for pastures new – telling AS (via HITC) that he will assess his future at the end of the season, remaining focused on Brentford at the moment. He did however go on to say that ‘every player has goals’, showing he may be looking for a new club, come the summer.

Likely to cost between £15 million to £20 million, Spurs will reportedly have to fight off interest from Chelsea and Manchester United if they are to secure the Spaniard’s signature (via the Telegraph).

Despite his good run of form, David de Gea is likely to not be in Erik ten Haag’s future plans due to his poor ball-playing ability and Raya of course is one of the best in the league when it comes to distribution.

Chelsea also may look to upgrade between the sticks with Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga both failing to impress at the Bridge.

So, if Spurs could manage to sign Raya, would he be a good signing?

Like previously stated Raya is one of the best in the league when it comes to having the ball at his feet – shown by the fact he completes 9.24 launched passes per 90, a total that puts him the top 5% of goalkeepers across Europe’s top five leagues (via FB Ref).

It is not only distribution in which Raya thrives, he is also a very good shot stopper shown by his 77.2% save percentage – a total that dwarfs Lloris’ save percentage of 69.6%.

Also, the fact he is 27 years-old means he has many more years at the top level – making the deal an absolute no-brainer in my eyes.
