Boss’ words on playing to ‘players’ qualities’ mean zilch if Spurs don’t start winning – Opinion

|

Well, today is going to be an interesting one in the Premier League, and Tottenham will be at the centre of everyone’s attention.

Newly-appointed Jose Mourinho will take charge of his first game for Spurs against London rivals West Ham, and the excitement is unparallel to any other managerial signing Tottenham have made in the Premier League era.

Indeed, plenty of supporters have already bought into the ‘Mourinho Show’ the Portuguese manager seems to bring to any club he is at the helm at, and his first press-conference as Spurs manager was no different.

Reported in full by Football London, Mourinho discussed why he took the Tottenham job, what this means for his former club Chelsea, and if he can win the Premier League title with the north London side, and the 56-year-old manager also briefly spoke about what style of football he will be bringing to Spurs.

Will we beat West Ham this weekend?

Yes

No

Mourinho said: “Very similar (tactics) to before. That’s what I keep saying. Very similar to before. Of course, I am going to try to add some details and sometimes details that can make the difference and progressively we will arrive at a fingerprint but the style of play has to be always adapted not just to the club culture but especially to the players’ qualities.”

It is an encouraging answer from a manager now controlling a side that have looked devoid of any real quality this season, yet as we have come to know from Mourinho over the past few years, talk is cheap and actions on the pitch will speak more volume than some quote in a press conference.

This afternoon’s fixture against West Ham will be a massive one for Tottenham, who can climb up to fifth in the Premier League table with a win if results elsewhere go in their favour, and victory against their London rivals will also be a huge sign to supporters that Mourinho will be playing to his players qualities, something that has not been witnessed from Spurs fans in what feels like an eternity.
