“We Can Achieve The Top Four” – Pochettino Takes The Positives On A Hugely Disappointing Day For Spurs

|

Tottenham Hotspur were looking to put the March international break behind them and get back to winning ways earlier this afternoon as we faced Liverpool at Anfield now the Premier League fixture list was back with fans.

With four games without a win stalling us in the top flight table, everyone was hoping we’d be more back to our best earlier today.

We didn’t start that way though and the hosts had the lead 16 minutes in, but after some tweaks by manager Mauricio Pochettino, we grew into the game and although clear cut chances were hard to come back, there was strong improvement in the second 45 minutes and Lucas Moura’s leveller in the 70th minute was deserved.

With opportunities wasted to take the lead, unfortunate the luck went Liverpool’s way in stoppage-time as Toby Alderweireld scored an own goal, although he had little choice in the matter.

An undeserved 2-1 defeat.

Speaking to the BBC following the full time whistle, Poch said of the match.

“We are all disappointed but at the same time we have to be happy with our second half performance. We were a little bit unlucky to concede the second goal when we should have been ahead because we dominated Liverpool, who are a very good team. No one wants to lose but it’s a different defeat than the ones we suffered against Southampton or Burnley. We cannot say it’s positive but now we start from zero and we can achieve what we want. I was telling the players in the changing room we have seven games and we are in top four and we need to compete. It’s a mini league and, playing the way we played today, I think we can achieve the top four.”
