Tottenham weighing up 28 y/o Hojbjerg alternative, Mourinho an “admirer” – Report

|

According to an exclusive report from the Daily Star, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino – with arch rivals Arsenal also holding an interest in bringing the player to north London.

Vecino, who has started 14 Serie A games under Antonio Conte this season, is currently being eased out of the first team to make room for new additions – resulting in the Argentine reportedly pondering a move away from the San Siro.

Manager Jose Mourinho wants to ‘add steel‘ to the midfield this summer, with Eric Dier tipped to play more in a centre-back role over the course of next campaign.

Should Spurs sign Vecino?

Yes, solid addition

No, we have enough midfield cover

Inter representatives have now reportedly contacted Spurs to assess our interest in signing the 28-year-old, and the club are ‘weighing up‘ the option to bring him in – potentially as an alternative to fellow linked target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Indeed, as per this report, Mourinho is an ‘admirer‘ of Vecino and could be tempted to make a move, which may be welcomed judging by the midfielder’s defensive stats.

According to WhoScored, Vecino has averaged more tackles in the middle of the park than Dier, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko this campaign – potentially supporting the theory he would add more robustness.

However, given chairman Daniel Levy’s stance on transfer fees this summer due to the impact of a recent pandemic, it’s debatable whether the club’s hierarchy would be willing to pay the £18 million fee required for his signature.

As Everton and Arsenal also display an interest, Spurs may have to make a decision on the 41-cap international sooner rather than later.
