“Great relationship with Mourinho” – Ex-Spur hints Tottenham could land “top-class” target

|

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Spurs keeper Paul Robinson has claimed that we could land Chelsea winger Willian this summer – citing his opinion that, if he were to remain in London, Tottenham may hypothetically be his ‘first choice’.

Willian, who is out of contract at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, has been touted with a cross-town switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – especially given the fact he has previously worked under the tutelage of current Lilywhites boss Jose Mourinho.

Should Spurs sign Willian?

Yes, especially on a free deal

No, don't let him near our club

The Brazilian winger, since signing for Spurs’ rivals back in August 2013, has racked up 59 goals and 59 assists over 329 appearances in all competitions according to Transfermarkt – starting 21 Premier League games this campaign alone.

During that time, as per WhoScored, the 31-year-old has managed five goals and five assists over Frank Lampard’s first full season in charge of the Blues, but his future at the club is currently up in the air given his current deal runs out at the end of June.

Now, taking that into account, pundit Robinson has suggested that a move to Tottenham could be his ‘first choice’ if he opts to stay in the capital – with the 40-year-old claiming that his ‘great relationship’ with Mourinho could set us apart from other interested parties.

“Willian will not come cheap wages wise,” he told Football Insider.

“A player that has a great relationship with Mourinho. If the player wants to stay in London and Tottenham was an option for him, you would imagine that would be his first choice.

“Loyalties towards Chelsea would have to be put to one side.

“I do not think it would take long for him to win over the Spurs fans. A lot of Spurs fans would take him with open arms because he is a top-class player.”

Even though the attacker seemingly possesses quality, Spurs supporters don’t appear too keen to snap him up as sections of fans berate the recent transfer links online.

Despite this, judging by Robinson’s verdict, the fact he could be considered ‘top-class’ may mean that a swoop for the South American on a free transfer could be the logical decision.
