Tottenham: It’s All To Play For.

|

With around three weeks to go until the Premier League kicks off again, at least one thing has been sorted; the fixtures. The other remaining ‘thing’ to be sorted, the Transfer Window, will hold our undivided attention for a while longer.

But with the release of the fixtures the upcoming season becomes serious. We have something concrete to consider and speculate on. We can examine the fixture list for all competing clubs and attempt to determine how the start of the season might progress and we can consider what would make for a successful season when it’s all over. It’s the time for all optimists, cynics, hopefuls, and dreamers, to show what they’ve got.

In this regard, nothing has changed for me since last season. I want to see eleven Spurs players on the park playing good football (however that is defined) as a team; a solid unit. I want to see Spurs finish in the top four with Champions League football on the horizon. I want to see a new and welcome Cup (any cup) added to our neglected trophy cabinet. And I want to be entertained. And I don’t think what I want is either unreasonable or unrealistic.

Looking at the list, the early games suggest we can be off to a very good start. A good start will give us something to build on and push us well into the season. We seem to have three winnable games before we meet United away. Three games to gain confidence and a belief when we face them. That game is followed by more winnable games. The United game could be crucial …. but not season-defining.

For those who believe in fairies, consider this. Our most successful season happened in 1960-61. This season is 2020-21. That season started with a home game against Everton (2-0). This season starts with a home game against Everton. I know, it’s freaky, isn’t it. (smile of amusement).

So, the questions are: What do we want? What is realistic? and …. Do you believe in fairies?

As regards Gold – I would say he’s more clued up than the average fan so worth some respect – indeed even you yourself say you choose to listen to him sometimes – even if it is for up to 40 odd minutes on occassion LOL – way too long for me to get my head around and then try to remember – prefer to read rather than listen – perhaps shorter concentration span needed – which is fine by me LOL!

Ceefax…………lol, a reminder of how far we have progressed in the digital world! 🙂

  • El Jefe says:

Cheers HT – much appreciated mate – I do also post some links just so other people can read them in case have missed them and if I find they are of some interest – perhaps you are fully clued up and don’t need this – I myself do sometimes appreciate when other’s also post links especially if I’m busy in life and can’t myself keep abreast as I say via Newsnow Spurs regularly!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I listened to the whole Vlog because you keep linking to his words. That was me paying my respect to him and you. But you relaying titbits of his, spoken by what sounds like a computerised female voice is not showing respect to him at all.

And by the way, what Gold said about Lo Celso 2 days ago on this very thread, is almost exactly what I said about Lo Celso several days ago on here. Except that I didn’t mention the mans groin. 🙂 But as Gold was himself, I was just speculating…..

  • Hot Tottingham says:

It’s not about being clued up. I’m not. But those links are nearly always not clued up at all. They are mostly bits nicked from other sites that are just bull in the first place… I watch Spurs and I make up my own mind about what I see. Not what I have read in a nonsense headline! It is all my opinion…

  • El Jefe says:

Hit and miss for me HT – the speculation around Hoj proved correct, Hart and Doherty came about more from out of the blue (although speculation about a new RB proved correct also) – also speculation need not necessarily be incorrect it’s just given how hard transfers are to get done (for example what Levy recently said and what you and a few others have always alluded to on here also about this and how hard it can be/is) it could well be the case that much speculation is in fact correct but that only some of it gets fully acted upon and actually goes through!

Of course I watch regularly and try to make up my own mind but reading stuff about us also can always help influence (my/other’s) opinion and I have no problem in admitting this!

It seems the two cheap as chips geysers, £20m, everyone is talking about that Spurs need as a back up STR’s, have gone somewhere else or are about to, Wilson to Toons, King to Villa, its probably because at those two clubs they will be first choice or there about’s and did not want to compete with HK, so declined us, not wanting to be also ran bench warmers, which they most certainly would have been.

So where do we go from here, buy/sign an older/exp hand who cannot last the course of a season anymore, perfect back up really, or do we go for a patient wants to learn young player, personally I would like both lol! but that isn’t going to happen, and maybe JM has other idea’s because in his opinion we have what he wants already on the books, suppose we will just have to wait and see. COYD

  • PompeyYid says:

COYD haha getting old = COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

Have to say, if anyone reads through this whole thread two thirds of it seems to be repetition. Not sure why that needs to happen. It probably explains why many posters have dropped out. I think we need a new (and less repetitious) thread …. match-day!!

  • Geofspurs says:

    Just my opinion, of course.

  • El Jefe says:

PY – good post mate first of all and good morning and hope you are both keeping well naturally!

I was one who would have liked either to be perfectly honest, proven in Prem with plenty of experience and decent goal provision records (King also internationally), home-grown and pretty cheap for STR’s – just seemed to make sense to me indeed if these guys don’t want to be on our bench and some say they are not all that anyway – who the hell is going to come in then – especially decent wise and again for a decent price and be willing to sit it out maybe on a regular basis (especially as regards the Prem)?!

In a year’s time we may well be moaning about not signing either of these 2 and having gone French again with this now heavily linked Habib Diallo, etc – sincerely hope not of course but would not be surprised at all!

We seemed to be going down the true and tested path of reliability with Hart, Doherty and Hojbjerg – but now appear to be veering off it again – well let’s wait and see and hope I guess………!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Trouble is there is very little new news to talk about Geof………I blame Levy! 🙂

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. Opinions, speculation, arguments, etc, about THFC’s transfers can only go so far and, in the end, mean zilch. The only thing that is meaningful is the players we start the season with and the philosophy and management skills of JM. That will be the reality, methinks. And there’s only a few days left to wait for that.

  • El Jefe says:

Geof sorry about that as I am definitely involved in such as HT was also saying to me earlier – just it’s important to me and nothing seems to be being done about it so far hence my repetition – will try to tone it down from now on as best possible.

Also recently been spending a lot of time on here (partly because having trouble sleeping with my restless legs) and that may be why I’m repeating myself because it is definitely on my mind for sure with the season starting next Sunday and still no bloody 2nd STR signed yet – we were promised a balanced squad by JM last season especially at the time of HK10’s and Sonny’s injuries so I’m bloody still waiting for it and getting fed up about it for sure………….!

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ … True, but I’ve often thought that when there’s nothing to say, say nothing. lol As I suggested, it’s maybe time for the match-day thread. Anyone?

  • El Jefe says:

TQ – great point and you’re probably right about Levy also LOL!

I might add that I was right about a new DMC coming in (along with PY, ND and some others) and I did back Hojbjerg from pretty much the 1st round of speculation indeed putting on here stats about his ball retrieving exploits last season, etc!

I was also one who said I wanted Aurier out for a good while now and a new RB brought in and argued about it a lot on here – glad to see that likely to happen now also (Doherty already signed and Aurier likely to leave)!

Now just waiting for the STR and (L)CB and some further sales and if so I guess my constant and long repetitive ranting will have actually proved a bit relevant at least LOL!

Anyway no harm done my end and I love being on here and talking all Spurs – so for me it tends to be a pleasure and not a chore and may be recently spending a bit too long on here and like TQ says only so much to talk about so end up getting very repetitive – sorry gents – but thanks TQ for at least trying to back me up a bit – much appreciated matey……..!

Not that you HT and Geof, etc are not matey’s also LOL – long live Spurs carallo (lol)!

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. No need for any apology, mate. I submitted to my own frustration at reading two or three hundred comments about a player who may never wear a Spurs shirt instead of reading more comments about the (really good) players we already have. Anyway …. back to the tennis!!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I have done the same myself EJ… Don’t stop writing whatever you feel free to write. But it won ‘t stop me doing the same… But we are all aware of newsnow… It’s you and your thoughts I want to read not 4th hand stuff from elsewhere from folks who earn a living out of it. and therefore have to be creative with what they say on a daily basis.

The site you keep linking to on here is just pilfering from Gold to encourage the links and make money from them… Gold is making money from what he says too but at least he is a big and passionate Spurs fan. Not just a media vulture!

  • El Jefe says:

Geof – no worries mate – I’ve definitely banged on a lot about the likes of King and Wilson especially for a while now and should just have given/give it a rest and see what happens – indeed not going to influence anything am I and now seems both are going to end up going elsewhere anyway LOL (although both moving back within the Prem so I might in part also be right as it appears several Prem team’s were in for both and thus they appear to be respected/rated by the true professionals and within the Prem itself at that – in my part defence at least and some food for thought there then)!

As I just said above/earlier been on here a lot recently, much more than usual and as TQ rightly said only so much to talk about so you do end up getting repetitive almost naturally but I should really know when to stop and that enough is enough but then again I don’t also force anyone to read my posts and it clearly states my nickname next to my posts LOL…………!

  • El Jefe says:

Cheers HT – much appreciated – will definitely do so and likewise look forward to continue reading you on here also!
