Tottenham: Future History!

|

According to the media and some pundits, MP should go to United …. because they are a bigger club! I’ve just had a look at the league table …. bigger club? Doesn’t look like it! What does that mean to a potential manager?

Obviously it is a statement based on history. But if history determines the biggest club, then Spurs, having had the best team England has (arguably) ever produced, must be the bigger club. No, it doesn’t work like that. You can only live off of your achievements for so long. Then you have to produce something else.

Of course if the biggest club is determined by trophies then United are, historically, a bigger club than Spurs, as are some other clubs. But that, in itself, does not influence what happens on the park today or tomorrow. History is great for ‘bragging rights’ but it won’t win games.

History, in football, means little when considering the future. Looking at the league table and the overall current situation of Spurs and United why would MP even consider such a move. Especially when Spurs are embarking on a journey which he, himself, has mapped out a journey which is proving so exciting and promising. One club is growing and the other is in a state of confusion.

As far as football is concerned, what happened historically has no relevance to what is happening in real time. Winning the Double one season guarantees nothing for the next season when it all starts again. Winning a trophy one season won’t stop supporters from demanding another one when the next season arrives. It never does.

Perhaps it is just possible that Mr Levy and Mr Pochettino have a shared vision, one that will see THFC become the biggest club in Europe, or at least acknowledged as one of them. Perhaps they are both less concerned about past history and more concerned about.

Future history?! Now, wouldn’t that be nice?
