Mauricio Pochettino names which side are ‘clear favourites’ for the Premier League title

|

Mauricio Pochettino played down Tottenham’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season, insisting that Liverpool and Manchester City are “clear favourites”. Tottenham thrashed Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park on Sunday to go within two points of Man City in the table, but Pochettino still believes his side are outsiders in the title race, despite Spurs enjoying their best-ever start to a season – 42 points from 18 games.

As per BBC Sport, Pochettino said: “It’s so tough to win the Premier League but we are going to try. The clear favourites are Liverpool and Manchester City. We are there, but so are Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. Football is about being consistent. If we are able to be consistent and play in the way we did tonight I think maybe we could be a real contender, but there is still a long way.”

Liverpool are currently top of the table with 48 points from 18 games and remain unbeaten in the league this season. Jurgen Klopp’s men have won seven games on the bounce and are four points clear of defending champions Man City who have lost two of their last three league outings, most recently at home to Crystal Palace.

Tottenham have won four consecutive games to make up the deficit to the top-two and find themselves in the title race near the mid-point of the campaign. Whether they can maintain such momentum remains to be seen, but Pochettino deserves a lot of credit for his hard work paying off. After a disruptive summer and no permanent signings made, few could have expected Tottenham to impress as much as they have this season.
