Spurs have a goalkeeping dilemma – Opinion

|

Recently, Hugo Lloris celebrated a huge milestone as he reached ten years the club. Lloris joined Spurs all the way back in 2012, a time in which Spurs were going through transition under Andre Villas-Boas.

No Spurs fan could argue with the fact that the Frenchman has been an outstanding servant to the club. However, the World Cup winner turns 36 in December, which means the keeper will soon be entering the twilight of his career. So, is it time for the Lilywhites to move on?

It seems like the club’s hierarchy see it this way, as over the past week the club has been linked to, two high-profile goalkeepers.

Last week, Jan Oblak was the name on the lips of most Spurs fans. With the Slovenian shot-stopper apparently being on the shortlist of goalkeepers to replace Lloris. Oblak (29) has statistically been one of the best goalkeepers across Europe over the past five years, despite struggling last season.

According to French publication Jeunes Footeux, FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-AndrĂ© ter Stegen is another name on the list. With the 30-year-old German currently in the form of his life, currently having the most clean sheets in Europe’s top five leagues.

However, should Spurs be looking for a longer-term solution with a younger goalkeeper? Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier (22) is another name being suggested within the fanbase.

What would you do?

Stick with Hugo

It was time for change a year ago, but for some reason in the eyes of several managers, lloris is undroppable. Great shotstopper from long range shots, but very suspect from crosses and definitely not brave enough, and stays on his line too much. Should never be captain at the club, but apparently this is in his contract!!!! All wrong.

Good shot stopper. Dreadful at delivery…sometimes suicidal. Prone to occasional errors.
Very weak captain….never does anything to gee up the players.
He has been a loyal member of the squad.

Lloris is statistically one of the best keepers in the premier league over the last 3 seasons. He made a bad mistake, all keepers do. One mistake doesn’t make him a liability all of a sudden. We could still do a lot worse at the postiion. He’l lwin us more points this year than he’ll cost us. Would I take Oblak over him? Sure. But would Oblak want to come? Not sure.
