Following a disappointing London derby defeat to Arsenal at the beginning of December, Tottenham Hotspur were back in action late yesterday evening as we hosted Southampton and looked to get back to winning ways on Wembley soil.
There were no great shocks in the starting XI selected by manager Mauricio Pochettino, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld returned as did Danny Rose, but like other slight changes, that was probably anticipated.
With Southampton’s form so far in the Premier League campaign of 2018/19, despite appointing Ralph Hasenhuttl ahead of the game, there was also no real surprise in the final result.
Largely dominating the telling statistics on the day, Harry Kane gave us the lead nine minutes in, and quick-fire goals in the second 45 minutes from Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min meant by the time Charlie Austin found the net three minutes into stoppage-time – it was largely irrelevant for anyone who wasn’t focused on the clean sheet.
Southampton will think themselves unlucky as they did manage more chances overall it’s worth mentioning.
Onto the next one!
