Statement signing for Spurs

|

While the men’s team has been relatively quiet in the winter window so far, the same cannot be said for Tottenham Hotspur Women, who are currently on a domestic hiatus until January 14th when Aston Villa come to town.

Indeed, Spurs Women yesterday confirmed the signing of Beth England from table-topping Chelsea for a reported record fee in the women’s game, with the £250,000 Spurs have paid for her services eclipsing the previous record set by Chelsea’s purchase of Lauren James from Manchester United for £200,000 in 2021 (via Sky Sports).

England joins Spurs with an illustrious CV and highly respected reputation, having won nine major trophies during her stint at Stamford Bridge. In the 2019/20 season, she was named Chelsea Women’s Player of the Year, Barclays FA Women’s Super League Player of the Season, and PFA Players’ Player of the Year (via BBC Sport).

After her move to the Lilywhites was confirmed, England spoke of  her excitement to start a new chapter in her career:

“It’s obviously a big day for myself and I’m excited to get going,” said the 28-year-old forward to the club’s official website.

“The Club has got a lot of ambitions and I’m hoping that I can add to that and hopefully get the Club where it wants to be.

“It’s definitely going to be a challenge, different for me going from blue to white after obviously spending so long at Chelsea, but I’m excited for it and it’s something that I’m going to relish, a challenge that I’ll embrace with open arms.

“I’m sure it’s going to be an amazing new chapter for me and hopefully I can bring a lot of goals to the Club, as well as my experience and just a bit of leadership in the front line.

“I just want everyone to know that I’ll give everything I can for the Club and the badge. I’m someone who gives everything and, for me, it’s about making sure that I bring the best version of myself – my goals, my passion, my enthusiasm, my energy – to this team and hopefully that will be reflected on the pitch. It’s a privilege to be here and hopefully we can make some great memories together.”

Chelsea manager Hayes earmarked some praise for England, who leaves the Blues on good terms: “Beth has given tremendous service to the club. She leaves a winner and a Chelsea legend.

“She has contributed to all of our success over the past seven years. We wish her the very best for the next stage of her career,” said Hayes (quotes via BBC Sport).

In other news, the club have announced this evening that 20-year-old defender Gracie Pearse has been loaned out to Championship outfit Bristol City for the rest of the season.

Pearse made her Spurs debut in the 8-0 victory at Brighton back in October, and it is hoped that she will gain valuable first-team experience before rejoining the side next season.

Her signing alone isn’t enough, we need someone to create chances for her.

Very much agree with you there mate, it’s a start but the root of our goalscoring problems goes far far beyond a striker indeed.
