Spurs wing-back set for surprise switch to Spanish giants

|

Transfer deadline day often conjures up some weird and wacky moves as clubs scramble to find last-minute quick-fixes to their side and this has been perfectly shown by Matt Doherty’s loan move to Atletico Madrid. Yes, you did hear that right! Doherty is off to Madrid…

First reported by Marca and then confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, the Irishman looks set to join the Spanish giants on loan for the remainder of the season, with Doherty’s medical set to take place today.

The deal is reportedly a straight loan with no clauses or buy option included, meaning Doherty would return to North London come the end of the season.

Atletico Madrid had of course first tabled an offer for Djed Spence (more on that here) but after the 22-year-old rejected there advances, the Spanish club turned their attention to Doherty.

Doherty will now link up with fellow Spurs loanee Sergio Reguilon in the Spanish capital – meaning Los Colchoneros could soon be lining up with both Reguilon and Doherty as full-backs – that’s something I never thought I’d say!

The Irishman will of course hope to re-create some of the past successes of Spurs right-backs in Madrid – with former full-back Kieran Trippier thriving under Diego Simeone.
