BS the point I was trying to make about Modric is that it was a great goal. We have no one who can shoot from midfield or even pass the ball forwards or control the midfield. Without Son and Kane running their backsides off we would be in a very sorry state. Two players can make a team.
It’s a great pity we do not have two Harry Kanes then our midfield impotence would be solved. He is the one midfielder who can pass, dribble, tackle, take free kicks and score from distance. Just imagine 2 of him in our team.
Roll on the summer when we will get that midfield maestro, two brilliant wing backs and an extra striker who can score. Our team will be almost complete.

    • BelgianSpur says:

That player exists – he’s called Kevin de Bruyne! Those 2 in the same team would be something.

It almost happened at City, maybe we can put in a cheeky bid for KdB in the summer!

  • Love totty says:

And maybe a goalkeeper who can dominate his area and manage the defence as well as being a great shot stopper. Lloris was once the archetypal sweeper keeper but now is far too indecisive.

  • jod says:

Niall D – There’s nothing lucky about grinding out wins in close games if you are doing it consistently. Its about the right attitude and its what United and ourselves lack. West Ham have had it from the start of the season, Arsenal seem to have found it but Conte is still scratching his head as to why we don’t have it. The one thing that does seem to make a difference is how long we have between games, the longer the gap the better we seem to play in the next game. Since we are now out of everything except the league that should work in our favour.

  • jod says:

What no one ever explains when they moan about not having that creative midfield player is where exactly he’s going to play. Conte’s system is pretty much set in stone. The back three and wing backs never change. He normally plays two in midfield, bringing in a third only if he absolutely has to (like in the second half against Wolves). That means the midfield pair have to both be able to defend, maybe doable with a Modric but a major problem with an Eriksen. Really Conte looks to the wing backs to provide a lot of the creativity and that’s not going to change while he is in charge. What you need is midfield players who can defend but add something going forward too, Declan Rice is a good example of someone who has developed his game. Bentacur looks like he could do that, maybe Skipp as well.

  • BelgianSpur says:

jod – I think you’ll find plenty of examples in world football of players who can both defend and offer something going forward. Being a creative midfielder doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t defend.

Think of someone like Steven Gerrard – he wasn’t afraid to put a tackle in, he had a wonderful range of passing and choipped in with goals too.

I think the moans come from the fact that we have a collection of one-dimensional players, who are very good at one thing, but poor fits for a 343, where midfielders are expected to do a bit of everything.

  • PompeyYid says:

Reading both your posts, jod n BS, indirectly you are both saying the same, I think lol!

Yes we need that solid DM, the likes of say Wanyamha, then we also need a DM who can tackle/defend and have the smarts for forward play.

I actually believe we have signed one of those smart/tackle/defend DM’s as in Bentacur, ok his stats from other teams are not that good a reading, maybe played wrongly, but here at Spurs he will find his position, just my thoughts. COYS

  • Niall D says:

    Hi PY
    Trust you are well
Re Bentancour I saw a report on his game on Monday nite, his passing was well in the 90% and not all side ways, and backwards, he can put a tackle or two in as well, along with Kulu he, so far looks, a pretty decent signing so far, much better than “the re enforcement who couldn’t lift the team” stated by Jod when they had only played 20 mins. And certainly doing better than Ali is doing for Everton.
But I’ll keep my judgement on them until the end of the season 😉

    • PompeyYid says:

      Hey Niall

I am well thanks, hope the same of you.

Bentacur, actually gets me excited, long time coming, I really do try to watch how he plays every time we are on TV, thus get more impressed with him every time.

In my Opinion he is going to be some signing, like his oppo Kulu. COYS

  • jod says:

BelgianSpur – What are the chances of us signing someone of Gerard’s quality ? Zero I’d say. If you could come up with a couple of names we might actually be able to get I might be more impressed. I’m not sure what you mean by 3-4-3. That would imply the midfield players and wing backs are doing the same job, which they obviously aren’t. In Conte’s system the two midfield players primary job is to defend, not “do a bit of everything”, its the wing backs job to attack.

Is your problem not really the midfield players but Conte’s system ? because there’s not a cat in hells chance he’s going to change it.

  • jod says:

PompeyYid – I wouldn’t say Bentacur is there yet. To me Rice is the role model, he started where Skipp is now as a very good defensive midfield player. Then he added to his game season on season doing more and more going forward. Bentacur needs to do the same thing, if he does he could be something special in a couple of seasons.

    • PompeyYid says:

jod, I never said Bentacur is there yet!

All I said was that he was basically getting better every game, adding something to our midfield that has been missing a while.
I honestly think we will see the real best of him next season, esp following 13 or so more Prem Lge learning games and a close season under Conte. COYS

  • jod says:

Niall D – Maybe you and I have a different definition of what lifting the team actually means. To me it means we finish several places higher than we otherwise would through the contribution of that player. I’ve been impressed with Bentacur but he’s not that good, in our team arguably only Kane and Son are. Although statistically the most important player in terms of the difference in results with and without him this season is actually Eric Dier.

  • Niall D says:

Write it up what ever way you want Jod
Simply put they are currently making our team better than those who have left.
How many other teams have a Forward line who have created the most assists to each other, that would be none, so to compare anyone to Kane and Son is a misnomer.
I’m comparing Bentancour to the likes of Winks, N’Dombele and indeed Dele and so far he looks pretty good.
I’m also comparing Kuku to Lucas or even Bergs and again he looks better.
So for me they are an upgrade on what we had prior to Christmas, that was and us my point.
Will they be next level, as I said, unlike you I’ll delay judgement until the season ends.

    • Love totty says:

Yeh! I’ve tested negative for my overseas trip. But you guys could have told the border force that. 🙂

      • Geofspurs says:

LT ….. I’m not sure if I require regular (daily) testing as I frequently travel overseas on the VS site. Is the internet a spreader? What do you reckon? : – )

      • PompeyYid says:

Thumbs up LT, go travel and enjoy. COYS

  • wentworth says:

Jod. We have one of the best midfielders in Harry Kane. Such a great shame it has taken us 10 years to find another striker and we are still looking.
We still need a decent goalscoring midfielder and a reserve striker.
Maybe offloading Winks, Emerson, Bergweijn and the sale of Lo Celso and N’Dombele will bring in a some deposits for Levy to open his moth -ridden wallet.
    Always hoping for something better.

  • jod says:

Niall D – I would never compare any of our midfield to N’Dombele as they don’t play the same game or the same position so its meaningless. As I said before lifting the team to me actually means significantly improving the league position. If player X is slightly better than player Y but we end up in the same place I’m not going pretend its more than it is.

  • BelgianSpur says:

jod – start with James Ward Prowse as a player who would be affordable and can do a bit of everything.

Having said that, if the club are serious about contending for titles, they should absolutely be considering players of Gerrard’s quality.

In a 343, wing backs provide width but the whole midfield, central midfielders and wing backs included, are all expected to attack and defend. That’s not doing the same job; that’s called working as a unit.

It’s a bit like sayting that full backs and centre backs do the same thing because they’re all part of a back 4. That is greatly over simplifying football tactics.

  • Niall D says:

    Well for me Jod
N’Dombele was indeed a midfielder, I may be, wrong perhaps in Jod world he was a goalie,
The other comparison is that he actually played (is still signed) for Spurs.
He has been tried in that actual position, so there fore comparable.
Do I think Bentancour is an up grade on the likes of him and Lo Ceslo, so far I’ll say it again so far yes.
It’s as I said are we better off points wise than this time last year year, then yes,
Is ir “measurable success” then again yes
On the other hand we aren’t in the final of a cup, so less successful, perhaps.
In short as I said at this level it’s small margins and players who fit as a team which win games, these new, signings could fit our system.
I’ll leave my judgement on how they have performed until the season.
However even if they scored a bag full with a 100%pass rate you’d find a reason to put em down as it doesn’t suit your narrative.

  • BelgianSpur says:

As an aside, no mention of PSG’s exite from the CL and the implications for MP.

As much as it would be harsh to lay all the blame with MP (after all, PSG have a history of self destruction in the CL), it’s clear he isn’t the man to change their fortunes.

MP remains a likable character and probably a very good coach, but he just isn’t a winner.

    • wentworth says:

Wish he would come back to Spurs BS.
Best run of results in decades and wonderful football. So near 2nd in Prem and Champs league final. Who else has achieved anything like that for Spurs?
Come back Poch and put some smiles on our faces instead of grimaces.

      • BelgianSpur says:

WW – I don’t. He was instrumental in helping us grow, but it seems quite obvious that he’s not the man to help a team take that last step.

    • PompeyYid says:

BS agreed as a likable character and probably a very nice geezer, I think he lacks that harshness, takes no prisoners in his personality to make him a very good successful coach. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

ww…sorry not for me, the barn door is closed and that ship has sailed. COYS
