Match Thread – Spurs Face A Beatable Manchester United Side

|

The month of March didn’t open with a bang for Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side given the hugely disappointing FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough, so few thought we’d see an almost classic performance as we welcomed Everton to White Hart Lane on Monday for a thoroughly enjoyable 5-0 spanking.

I don’t think anyone will be expecting a second performance of that clinical quality as we make the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday, but coming back with all three points certainly isn’t out of the equation as they aren’t the side they used to be – despite all the help they continue to get from the Video Assistant Referee shambles.

The only fresh injury issue we have is Ryan Sessegnon’s muscular problem that saw him substituted at the half time break back on Monday and we can probably expect Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp to still be out for this one, but hopefully there won’t be any further unexpected issues as a positive result here would really lift spirits further.

Win

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Thanks Danny – if ever there was a must win game I believe this is it If we are to catch the Gooners for 4th place. Win this and Utd are out of it. Gooners have us and Liverpool to play so let us NOT put in a ‘Spursey’ performance against Utd. COYS.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi Danny thanks again.
I know every game is just a 3 points.
But for me mentally and indeed as a morale booster, this is, so much more.
If the team, including two new” average signings”play as well as on Monday, we could do very well.
But as LT alluded to earlier in the last thread any win at OT with a good performance will be, a good result.
Let’s hope we don’t capitulate and become a spring board for Man U to finish their season with a flourish.
I would love us to put another 6 past em, but Ill just take a win.

    • 123spurs says:

With this game, will we make the average united players look like top4. Both teams can’t afford to lose. It’s who ever makes the least mistakes. We should be confident but also cautious in our ability. Our last number of games have been win lose win lose win lose and one double loss.

    • Niall D says:

The issue with ManU is that they ain’t getting their usual 12 to 20 pens this season and they actually have to play football and score from play like the rest of us. 😉

  • PompeyYid says:

Hey Danny as the previous 2, thanks for the thread.

Right lets push Spursey out the door and travel to the “Theatre of Nightmares” for them anyway, and beat them on their own turf.

Come on lads we can do it after all its only MU.

Spurs you can do it, you know you can. COYS

  • Allan says:

I doubt that i will be able to watch the game ( perhaps a blessing ? ) so expect a win .
If Conte can continue to get the wing backs to constantly improve and gradually understand his methods then I feel that we will have too much for United .
Their defence appears a problem and with the correct pressure we could come away with a win .
However I hope that the recent win / loss pattern doesn’t crop up again and wecontinue to be Spursy !!

  • BelgianSpur says:

I’m not optimistic, unfortunately. Every time we are gifted the opportunity to make a statement, we fail to take it. This feels no different, sadly, but I hope I am proven wrong.

On the back of my little discussion with Jod re our new, signings.
It appears I’m not the only one who thinks they have improved the team 😉

  • jod says:

Niall D – Right so we’ll walk into fourth place now where before we wouldn’t have made it because the team is so much better ? Empty words about how the team have improved without saying what it can do that it couldn’t before are just waffle. As I said before if you end up in the same place its all pretty meaningless.

  • jod says:

As far as the game goes you have two totally inconsistent teams so its impossible to predict the result. Obviously United are at home, but that hasn’t always helped them this season. From our perspective the main thing may be the gap between games. The longer the gap the better we seem to play in the next game so I’m hoping that will work in our favour.

  • Niall D says:

Unfortunately Jod theres only one meaningless post here.
It’s not really about finishing top 4 this season, for me that’s a bonus.
It’s about taking steps in the right direction.
Creating a team ethos, a winning mentality, creating some consistency.
As I said, I write this slowly for you (OK?) Conte has really only been with us for less than half a season, he is working with other people’s signings, yet has measurably improved, results, scoring, work rate, fitness.
The two players he has actually brought in have, so far, looked like good signings, who whilst perhaps not next level yet, and they have slotted in well with our sides tactics and indeed helped improve the performances of those around us.
It’s hard to judge both a manager and new players mid way through a season.
So regardless even if we do make fourth this season unlikely as it is, your comment will undoubtedly be well we’ve been there before so no improvement.
Unless we actually win the league there will be no improvement in Spurs(by your standards) as we
have been anywhere from 2nd to 6th since 2009.
So little point discussing anything with you chum. 😉

  • BelgianSpur says:

Agree Niall. Getting results can either come from luck and/or the individual brilliance of certain star players, or it can come from consistency and familiarity with Conte’s tactics.

What we hope to see more of, going forward, is the latter.

We may have finished 5th anyways relying on the individual brilliance and Kane & Son – but that approach also means that we live and die with those 2 players. If either of those players miss any amount of time, the whole plan goes to hell.

Bringing in players who are better fits with Conte’s system, and creating depth and competition for places, means that in time (and it will take a bit of time), we’ll be less reliant on any one specific player. The performances will come from the effectiveness of the system rather than certain moments of individual magic.

    • Geofspurs says:

BS …. Not long ago you wanted Kane to leave the club. Now you are saying if we lose him our plan goes to hell. You would probably say he was out of form when you made that comment and I would come back with cut him some slack, he’ll find his form. What fickle mortals we supporters are.

      Anyway …. 0-3.

      • BelgianSpur says:

You must be confusing me with someone else. I have been adamant all along that we are a better team with Kane in it.

  • PompeyYid says:

Having read some good posts/opinions here, again! same ole same ole lol!

I am thinking that, backing up some posters thoughts…

Conte is trying to get Spurs away from the “relying on 2 players” syndrome and get Spurs as a team to be what we all want, that is play as a team, all putting/doing there bit for each and everyone in the side.

Afterall Football is a simple thing…it is a team game> COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

    Exactly PY

  • BelgianSpur says:

Having said that about Kane, as much as I believe we are a much stronger team with Kane in it, and that he’d be incredibly hard to replace, I also don’t believe in keeping players at a club against their will.

But that is quite different to wanting him to leave the club, I feel. Although I’m sure Geof will tell me how it really isn’t.

  • Geofspurs says:

BS …. Actually I believe it is different. We may well find out how the team performs without Kane next season.

  • wentworth says:

Despite what some may think or say, Poch was by far the best manager/ coach we have had in years.
Enterprising, entertaining, exciting and attractive possession football
Since then, I have been bored with most of our play and sometimes given on in frustration and disgust
Our new lads have shown some improvement to our play and there is hope for Conte to make the best out of our workmanlike but uninspiring squad. But we are still lacking inspiration.
Tomorrow will be a critical test of our resolve and tactics.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Manchester United 2-6 Tottenham Hotspur!

  • Allan says:

    HT I wish !!

  • block 108 spurs says:

Spurs have a chance to catch up gooners by beating Man utd. As BS says, spursy performances are usually seen in these type of games…. But i am hopeful again (as ever!) we get the 3 points at old trafford. A 1 goal win margin will be acceptable for me.

Also its good to see Man Utd not getting their help of penalties from game officials, and may this continue today.

  • Niall D says:

HT I hope your prediction comes true🙏
BS agreed, I said as much myself earlier, Man U were getting between 12 and 20 pens given per season 2 years running they topped the pens awarded charts.
It took Klopp to publicly state this anomaly before something was done about it.

  • 123spurs says:

Going as predicted, what a farse of a club
