Spurs tipped to sign “brilliant” £110k-p/w attacker who bullied Alderweireld – Report

|

Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson has tipped Spurs to sign Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud who could be made available for just £7 million – with chairman Daniel Levy and co on the hunt for bargain deals amid the global pandemic.

Giroud, who has scored 21 goals for our cross-city rivals since joining the club from Arsenal, recently put pen to paper on a contract extension worth £110,000-per-week – but Chelsea could arguably want to offload the ‘brilliant‘ 6ft 4 colossus before his new deal runs out.

Would you take Giroud at Spurs?

100%

Absolutely not

Enter Spurs, who are reportedly on the look-out for a back-up to star striker Harry Kane, especially considering the Englishman has suffered injury problems this campaign.

This has potentially alerted manager Jose Mourinho and the board to our lack of cover, with the Daily Express reporting last week that we have revitalised our interest in bringing Giroud to north London.

Even though he plied his trade for our fierce rivals Arsenal, his consistent goal return in the top flight is arguably a real incentive to buy at a cheap price – with Robinson now claiming he could be a smart signing.

“The way that Spurs play, with one number nine, it suits him. He plays that way for France, it is exactly the same,” explained the ex-England international to Football Insider.

“He is not the most prolific but he occupies centre-halves and defenders.

“Some of his best football has been played in the latter half of this season after the move collapsed in January. Since he knew he was staying at Chelsea he has been outstanding.

“You would not rule him out as an option for Tottenham because of the way he plays.”

As per the Athletic, Tottenham have had to borrow £175 million through the Bank of England in order to stave off losses brought upon by recent events, with our club’s transfer policy now focusing on loan deals, free agents and potential bargain buys.

Giroud arguably falls into the latter category, especially considering he bullied defender Toby Alderweireld during our last visit to Stamford Bridge.

As per SofaScore, Giroud not only found the back of the net against us in late February, but also managed two shots on goal, 42 touches and was victorious in 70% of his aerial duels – giving Alderweireld and co a tough afternoon.

Whether or not we sign the Frenchman remains to be seen, but he could be a proven stand-in for Kane.
