Spurs performance from a ‘very difficult situation’ shows club still have work to do – Opinion

|

Playing against Bayern Munich at home is a daunting task for any club in European football, and last night proved to be the case for Tottenham.

Jose Mourinho’s side were easily swept aside 3-1 by the Bavarian side who could had easily scored more if Paulo Gazzaniga wasn’t at his usual best between the sticks, and Bayern were also unfortunate to lose one of the scorers on the night, Kingsley Coman early in what looked like a potential ACL tear as reported by The Daily Mail.

And the Spurs boss knew going into the game that it was always going to be a difficult game, with Mourinho saying to The Independent after the full-time whistle: “It was a very difficult situation. It was play and prepare a game where you put more emphasis on the players who rest than the players who play and the result that you are fighting for. That is very difficult.”

Will Mourinho fix the defence?

Yes

No

With Mourinho deciding to leave some key players for the trip to Germany with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Serge Aurier, it is understandable as to how Spurs were so easily overwhelmed by Bayern, but with the Bundesliga giants also deciding to rest several key players, it showed that Tottenham still have work to do on the pitch.

Eric Dier was again poor in the defensive midfield role whilst Moussa Sissoko also unimpressed in the middle of the park alongside the English international, and summer signing Giovani Lo Celso also wasted a golden chance to impress Mourinho as the Argentine playmaker was dragged off just past the hour mark.

Mourinho knew the mess he was getting himself into when he took up the Tottenham job last month, and although the former Manchester United manager has done well to steady the ship, work still needs to be done if Spurs are to return to their former glory.
