Spurs monitor Ligue Un duo

|

According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Tottenham Hotspur have been scouting Stade Rennais duo Adrien Truffert and Lovro Majer.

Majer, a 25-year-old Croatian international, is an attacking midfielder, while Truffert is a 21-year-old left wing-back.

While links with an attacking midfielder make sense, I’m a bit perplexed as to why we’d be pursuing a left-wing back, a position we’re well stocked in. Indeed, although Ivan Perisic is not a long-term solution at the age of 33, he still has 18 months to go on his contract, and is already competing with Ryan Sessegnon for the left-wing back berth.

Ben Davies can also provide cover there, as has Matt Doherty (albeit to limited effect), and of course, Destiny Udogie will join up with the team from Udinese in the summer, and one assumes that he will compete with Sessegnon for that spot in the long run (unless Truffert is being eyed up as an eventual replacement for Sessegnon).

Antonio Conte’s current indifference to commit to a new contract also sheds doubt on whether we’d pursue wing-backs in the event that his hypothetical replacement does not fancy a system utilising wing-backs.

The report states that Spurs are not the only gun in town for the duo, however, with Manchester United reportedly in the running too for Truffert and Majer, meaning that there is no clear run at either player.

What’s more, with our recent pursuits of Pedro Porro and Nicolo Zaniolo, one would also be inclined to assume that the Rennes pair are not Spurs’ immediate priority just yet, and a move for the duo may very well wait for the summer rather than the here and now.
