Spurs in South Korea – Part I

|

Nothing harks back to the pre-COVID era like a pre-season tour to the Far East, and so it feels rather nostalgic that Tottenham Hotspur kick off their preparations for the 2022/23 season with a trip Son Heung-Min’s homeland, South Korea.

Whilst such voyages often elicit a mixed response from the various parties involved – indeed, one can imagine how Mauricio Pochettino would howl with the anguish of Tanguy N’dombele on a ketogenic diet every time he’d receive the pre-season itinerary from his superiors – but for many fans, there’s something inherently ‘nice’ about these processions. Whether that’s the image of Harry Kane lobbing Wojciech SzczÄ™sny in Singapore 3 years ago, or seeing us lift the coveted Asia Trophy in 2009, there’s something in it for everyone. If nothing else, given Son’s status as an established South Korean brand, it will bring money to the club.

Given our burgeoning popularity in South Korea, for many locals it will be their first opportunity to see their hero(es) live, so there is an added element of ‘niceness’ to this trip, regardless of the more cynical undertones of the obvious commercial benefit of touring South Korea.

Aside from the aforementioned commercial benefits to the club, and the sentimental value to locals, this tour gives us a good opportunity to take a provisional look at our new signings, returning absentees, and a couple of youngsters in the early stages of the transfer window. I know I’m looking forward to it, and I’m sure I’m not alone here.

Wow! a thread that didn’t begin as a advert for a writer to start threads.

I’m not sure it’s the end of covid, as the first sentence said. My family is just coming out of a nasty bout with covid over the past week and a half. granted, no life threatening hospitalizations. Thanks to the vaccines. but it still was bloody unpleasant.

I’m really looking forward to this coming season. Not used to the feeling of all of the additons/subtractions, but there’s the look of positive changes.

This must be a nice moment for Son, his PL team in Korea because of his importance. Well done, lad.
