Spurs eye-up move for £25 million-rated midfielder

|

According to Calciomercato, the Lilywhites have reportedly re-entered the race for Juventus midfielder Weston Mckennie.

Spurs were said to previously been interested in the American last summer but injury issues in the Juventus squad quashed any potential move.

Director of football Fabio Paratici is said to be a fan of the player with the Italian signing the midfielder back in 2020 while he was still pulling the strings at Juventus.

The American has not had it easy in Italy, struggling for game time in previous seasons. However, this season he has already made 14 appearances, becoming a regular starter under manager Max Allegri.

The midfielder – who has 34 caps for the USA men’s national team – features mainly central midfield, but he can also deputise on the wing.

To see whether Mckennie would be a worth-well signing for the Lilywhites, I have dived deeper into the stats, to see what the numbers tell us.

The stats provided make me question why the club are even interested in 24-year-old. As he is not a very active defender or passer, only really ranking highly in the attacking metrics – he rankis in the top 8% (across Europe’s top five leagues) of midfielders for non-penalty goals and shots on target.

Central midfield is probably one of the positions that Spurs are strongest in, with summer signing Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp providing good cover for Hojbjerg and Bentancur.

So, it begs the question as to why Spurs are looking to sign another central midfielder when they clearly should be concentrating on other positions like attacking midfield and wing-back.

Last winter Spurs brought in two players who have made a significant positive difference in Bentancur and Kulu while this past summer window looks to have been almost a complete waste with no major difference makers to the side. Maybe there’s a deal that can bring the highly projected wingback Destiny Udogie in early from his Udinese loan back. Spurs are in desperate need of higher quality wingbacks and much better ball handling creative midfield attackers.
