Spurs draw Italian giants AC Milan in Champions League round of 16

|

Following Tottenham’s late heroics in Marseille last week, the Lilywhites have bagged themselves a knockout tie against AC Milan.

AC Milan are of course reigning Serie A champions – with their league title last season being there first since 2011. They also currently sit second in the Italian table, six points behind run-away leaders Napoli.

Similarly, to Spurs, Milan did not make easy work of the group stage with the Italian outfit having to defeat RB Salzburg on the final matchday to secure qualification. They were also comfortably beaten twice by Chelsea – with the Italians failing to really lay a glove on the Blues.

Spurs are of course no stranger to facing the Rossoneri in the Champions League, with the pair facing off way back in 2011. With the Lilywhites coming out on top, winning 1-0 on aggregate, with a Peter Crouch goal being enough to put Spurs through to the quarterfinals.

The game would be most remembered for the feisty exchange between Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso and Spurs coach Joe Jordan.

Milan is arguably a decent draw for Spurs as the Lilywhites could have drawn big hitters such as PSG, however on the other hand the Spurs faithful may have been hoping for a slightly easier tie, in the name of Club Brugge and Borussia Dortmund.

The tie is set to take place in February of next year, with Milan hosting Spurs in the first leg.

And to think that DL flirted recently with hiring Gattuso as Spurs manager.

Perhaps Conte’s boring tactics will play better against this Seria A team than it does against PL league teams. If both teams play the Italian style, we’ll be lucky if either gets a goal, with all the back passing. Someone like Dier is likely to make a lazy back pass and Milan will sneak through by 1 to nill.

Could have been kinder, could have been worse.

By the time this tie comes around will Spurs have made new player acquisitions in the January window? Specifically two new wingbacks on both sides, a creative midfielder and a new central defenseman? Regardless of anything done, playing Emerson out of position as a right wingback is the weakest link of the team and is mystifying how Conte continues to go on with this diminished selection.
