Defoe off and scoring, Berbi plays second fiddle.

While rumours surrounding a second offer from Spurs for Charlton’s Darren Bent, this time reported to be an incredible £14million, Jermain Defoe got back to doing what he does best by opening the scoring in last nights 2-1 win over Bordeaux in our opening season friendly.

Newcastle again are tipped to be waiting in the wings with an offer to prise JD away from White Hart Lane with Glenn Roeder stating ‘I only want players who are not only hungry for success but absolutely starving.’

However Martin Jol has backed Defoe to return to the England line up after impressing for 60 minutes before being replaced by O’Hara.

JD opened the scoring after 35 minutes with a typical goal, a low drilled shot from the edge of the penalty area into the corner of the net after having had the ball played to his feet by Danny Murphy.

Defoe had a weak shot saved ten minutes before his goal and another cheeky shot, Pedro Mendes style, from close to the half way line, which dipped just over the bar.

Berbatov, on the other hand provided a solid performance with one shot well saved and another lashed wide from 20 yards before being replaced by
Lee Barnard on 79 minutes.

Robbie Keane did not feature in the line up but it was JD who stole the limelight on the night prompting Martin Jol to add. ‘Jermain is a 20-goals-a-season player. He started tonight because we needed him and the first thing he did was score a goal, so what else can you ask for?’

A Kieran McKenna header added Spurs second goal three minutes from time. With Jermain back on the goal trail and strong backing from Martin Jol hopefully we can now put any more transfer rumours to bed and look forward to a prolific season from JD for Spurs and England into the future.
