Spurs Answer A Question Despite Gutting Late Liverpool Defeat – Match Stats

|

Whether you’re a Tottenham Hotspur fan who was relishing, or worrying, about tonight’s top of the table clash with Liverpool, whilst the game itself wouldn’t be a decider in our unexpected run for the Premier League title this year, it could well be one of those games either side ends up looking back on come the end of the year.

It was a mixed start in the opening 45, and the hosts did more dominate the ball and chances but it felt like we needed to go up a gear. Mo Salah opened the scoring 26 minutes in, but Son Heung-Min had us level just after the half hour mark.

1-1 at the break and we simply had to be better in the final 45.

We largely were really and did carry more of a threat, but it turned into a more physical half and if either side had actually tested the goalkeeper we could’ve had a cricket score. We were arguably on top and looking the more likely to score despite them continuing to have more of the ball but at the death, Firmino made it 2-1 and try as we might we just couldn’t get back into it.

The statistics will tell one story, those neutrals who watched will, without doubt, feel we deserved a point as a minimum.

It wasn’t a great performance from us but our game plan was obvious and evident. If you give Liverpool the first half on chances, there’s no question we had the second half and overall, the better chances anyway.

Fans will find fault with the performance, but we didn’t choke, we didn’t crumble and it wasn’t Spursy – we just didn’t have Lady Luck with us in the final third.

So that does answer one question about our mentality. Gutted, but confidence should not be dented.
