Ryan Sessegnon could leave Tottenham as Leeds, Southampton, Brighton and Ajax are linked

|

According to The Athletic, Ryan Sessegnon could leave Tottenham on loan this summer. The 20-year-old hasn’t played a minute of football under Jose Mourinho this season and finds himself behind Ben Davies and new-boy Sergio Reguilon in the pecking order.

The Athletic say Leeds United, Southampton, Brighton & Hove Albion, Ajax and Hertha Berlin are keen to offer Sessegnon an escape route, but it remains to be seen where he’ll end up.

Tottenham move couldn’t have gone worse

Sessegnon’s career has stalled since he joined us from Fulham in 2019. The 20-year-old has gone on to make only 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal with one assist, amassing less than 800 minutes of playing time.

He spent the first three months of last season out with a hamstring injury and didn’t make his first Premier League appearance until November – gameweek 11.

The 20-year-old’s last top-flight outing came in January (gameweek 24), so his debut campaign in North London didn’t go to plan. Sessegnon spent a lot of 2019/20 on the bench and out of the matchday squad, so it’s not surprising that he’s been fazed out.

It’s just a shock that Jose Mourinho has gone back on his word, as he previously talked up Sessegnon’s abilities and said he wanted to convert him into a left-back. Now he’s willing to let another club develop the 20-year-old for a season? Also, would Sessegnon even feature with Davies and Reguilon for competition?

Probably not.

Where will he go?

The Athletic say Brighton, Southampton and Hertha Berlin have shown the most interest in Sessegnon, but Leeds are also in the running. Ajax have been linked in the past and could make a move if Nicolas Tagliafico leaves.

Tottenham are happy to let the 20-year-old leave on loan, but they’re unwilling to agree a buying option. They want a loan fee for Sessegnon and his wages covered in their entirety.

Whether suitors agree to those demands remains to be seen, however, as they would like the opportunity to turn Sessegnon’s loan move permanent. He’s got five more years on his deal at Tottenham, so it’s clear we’re playing the long-term game.
