Tottenham could sacrifice Ryan Sessegnon for Sergio Reguilon despite Jose Mourinho comments

|

I questioned why we were signing Sergio Reguilon with Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon and Dennis Cirkin at our disposal, but David Ornstein of The Athletic has given us an answer – to replace Sessegnon.

We’re looking to generate funds for new arrivals this summer and Ornstein says we’ll ‘entertain approaches in some form’ for the 20-year-old, just one year after signing him.

It remains to be seen whether that will be on loan or permanently, but it’s clear Jose Mourinho is happy to sacrifice Sessegnon for Reguilon.

Why are we souring on Sessegnon?

We paid £25m to sign Sessegnon from Fulham last summer, but he’s only made 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal with one assist. Sessegnon had to wait until November to make his Tottenham debut due to a hamstring injury and struggled to get in the side upon his return to fitness.

His last Champions League appearance came back in March, his last FA Cup appearance came back in February and his last Premier League appearance came back in January. The 20-year-old was an unused substitute 15 times last season and was left out of the matchday squad 12 times.

Despite his disappointing campaign, Sessegnon’s future was meant to be bright at Tottenham. Mourinho tried to sign the wide-man when he was Manchester United manager and planned to turn the wide-man into a left-back at Tottenham, but it appears he’d rather sign a replacement instead.

Where will he go?

Unsurprisingly, former side Fulham have been linked with Sessegnon. They’d be able to provide Premier League football while being a familiar face, but chairman Tony Khan has played down the prospect of a move.

Newcastle United have been linked with the 20-year-old too and would also be able to provide Premier League football. Steve Bruce is eyeing a season-long loan deal, but it’s still up in the air what will happen. The transfer window shuts on October 5.

Prediction

It looks like Sessegnon will be loaned out to facilitate Reguilon’s arrival this season. The Daily Mail said as much, but it’s only a short-term solution to our problem as next summer we’ll have three left-backs vying for one spot. So, what is Mourinho’s plan? Is Davies being dropped for Reguilon this campaign?
