Report: Tottenham may have to pay £60m and £4.7m wages to sign highly-rated defender

|

Tottenham are expected to sign a central defender this summer to replace Toby Alderweireld, and The Sun believe Harry Maguire is their number one transfer target. Spurs will have to battle Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United for the centre-back’s signature, however, as his fine form for Leicester City has led to lots of interest.

Maguire has made 30 Premier League appearances this season, scoring three goals. The 26-year-old has won 118 aerial duels (78%), averaged 56 passes-per-game with 85% accuracy, blocked 34 passes/crosses/shots, made 146 clearances and has averaged a tackle (30) or interception (35) every 39 minutes.

The Sun say Leicester want £60m for Maguire while Spotrac report that his wage demands could be in excess of £4.7m-a-year/£90k-per-week. The England international might be too pricey for Tottenham given their transfer record is £42m for Davinson Sanchez in 2017.

There are only two players in the Tottenham squad who earn more than £5.2m-a-year/£100k-per-week too, so it’s hard to see Maguire being recruited on so much money. The Leicester defender would certainly improve the side and could be a good replacement for Alderweireld, but whether this deal gets over the line remains to be seen.

Arsenal, Chelsea and United could still throw a spanner in the works.
