Report: Leverkusen ‘targeting’ Tottenham defender, ‘it’s possible’ he could move on deadline day

|

According to Kicker, Bayer Leverkusen are ‘targeting’ Jan Vertonghen after his fallout with Mauricio Pochettino. The 32-year-old is currently out of favour under the Tottenham manager and is reportedly keen on moving to Germany. Kicker say ‘it’s possible’ Vertonghen could move to the BayArena on deadline day.

The Belgian international has yet to make a Premier League appearance this season, having been an unused substitute in two of Tottenham’s first three games. He was left out of the matchday squad for their league opener to Aston Villa (August 10) and was left on the bench against Manchester City (August 17) and Newcastle United (August 25).

Vertonghen is said to have been dropped due to his poor performances in training. His contract is up in 2020 and it’s appears unlikely that he’ll put pen to paper on an extension. Leverkusen hope to capitalise on the situation as they’re in the market for a strong centre-back. Despite the pair not seeing eye-to-eye, Pochettino is unlikely to sell Vertonghen this summer as he cant sign a replacement.

Tottenham would be left with Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth at centre-back, and they’d have to wait until January to bring another defender in.
