Opinion: Defender won’t agree new deal at Tottenham despite reports

|

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham has been up in the air for a long time. The 30-year-old had a release clause attached to his contract until two weeks before the summer transfer window shut and still hasn’t agreed a new deal.

Wayne Veysey of the Football Insider reported on Wednesday that Alderweireld was keen to commit his future to Tottenham, but it’s hard to see him staying given the club’s current predicament.

Mauricio Pochettino’s future is uncertain, Danny Rose nearly left over the summer, Serge Aurier is surplus to requirements, Jan Vertonghen is considering a move to Germany and Victor Wanyama could be moving to Belgium.

The transfer window is shut for Tottenham to sign new players, but a number of existing ones could still be sold in the coming days. Spurs haven’t had the best start to the season either – seventh in the Premier League with four points from a possible nine – so why would Alderweireld agree a new deal?

Football Insider say the centre-back will earn £120k-per-week if he puts pen to paper, but the money may not be the only factor in Alderweireld’s decision – it may be the risk of a potential exodus at Tottenham too.
