Report Claims Pochettino Adds A Personal Touch To Help Spurs Beat Southampton To January Target

|

Whilst the October international break now at an end and Tottenham Hotspur now preparing for this Saturday’s clash with Watford as we look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League, foreign press have linked us with having a serious interest in Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The 22-year-old Frenchman made the switch to the Bundesliga side from Lyon back in the summer of 2018 and according to Soccerbase credit him with making 30 starts, six substitute showings with a return of 14 goals – however, he is yet to feature for them in the 2019/20 campaign as he underwent a meniscus operation and his recovery is ongoing.

According to Sport Bild, via Sport Witness, Spurs have firmed up their potential interest in the player and they have claimed that manager Mauricio Pochettino personally called his agent, Pierre-Henri Bovis, to discuss a potential move – presumably in January.

The player had been linked with the likes of Watford, Everton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Cardiff City but miraculously, Mainz held onto him and extended his contract amidst that interest. The outlet also suggest Newcastle saw a 28million Euro bid rejected because it was ‘too little’ but it now appears to be a two horse race between ourselves and Southampton.

I doubt we’ve heard the last of this one but let’s be honest, Spurs wouldn’t have leaked the contact, so I guess we can see where this one is going.
