Report: Atletico Madrid ‘will approach’ £80k-per-week Tottenham man ‘in January’

According to Anthony Chapman of The Sun, Atletico Madrid ‘will approach’ Christian Eriksen ‘in January’.

The Liga giants will be able to agree a pre-contract deal with Eriksen in the New Year as his existing deal expires in the summer of 2020. He could move to Atleti on a free transfer six months later. Unless Tottenham can tie their £80k-per-week forward down to a contract extension, they’ll lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

Eriksen’s future has been uncertain for a while. He spoke out in an interview over the summer, admitting he was open to a new challenge and was looking to join Real Madrid. A move away from Spurs failed to materialise before deadline day, however, which has left Daniel Levy and Eriksen in a difficult situation.

Tottenham must either cash in or agree a new deal, but they’ve so far done neither and it could result in them losing a key player without remuneration – the worst-case scenario. Spurs could still sell Eriksen in January to a club willing to pay to have him six months early, but the Lilywhites would be taking a big risk in hoping a European giant doesn’t offer a sizeable pre-contract.

They’re likely to spend the next few months offering the 27-year-old a lucractive new deal.
