Race For Fourth Place Hots Up

The fans are still recovering from the weekends injury time loss to Chelsea. It seems many are questioning why exactly the team and manager can’t learn how to close down a game. A point at Stamford Bridge would have been a good result and you have to ask why the team can’t learn to be ‘more professional’ in order to close down a game. I guess the counter argument to that is we would then moan that they aren’t playing the attacking and attractive football we all demand, but for goodness sake, how many points have we wasted in the final minutes of games this season, I’ve lost count?

It has also occurred to me what a strange league it now is when we are all talking about 4th spot instead of top spot. Have the ‘top teams’ really pulled that far ahead from the rest that there is a league within a league? Don’t answer that!

Seems the management team and players shared the disappointment:

Jermaine Jenas said: ‘It was difficult coming off that pitch as losers. We definitely did enough to get a point. There was a stage of that game where we had them on the ropes and could have nicked it. We have to try to stay positive. It was a good performance from us and a really bitter pill to swallow when Gallas pops up with a goal like that in the last minute.’

Adding: ‘It’s always going to be tight. At this stage of the season every club you come up against is fighting for something….We’re a good footballing side and were unlucky not to nick something.’

The race for fourth spot is certainly hotting up when we could really have put it out of reach of the chasing pack if only we’d been able to close down a few games.

Chris Hughton agreed with the fans that the loss was ‘heartbreaking’ but on the positive side adds ‘but we are still upbeat about fourth place. There’s nine games to go and it’s the first time we’ve been in this position at this stage of the season.’

He also says of the weekends game: ‘We are upbeat about the performance. We were up against real quality. We came away to the best team in the country but most people would say that we deserved something from the game.’

Finishing: ‘I feel for the lads and they are all bitterly disappointed in the dressing room.’
