Player Ratings: Eintracht Frankfurt v Spurs

|

Another frustrating night at the office for us Spurs fans… Chance after chance, it just wasn’t our night tonight.

Hugo Lloris- 6

The Frenchman did not have much to do but his distribution was poor throughout the game.

Emerson Royal- 6

A better display from the Brazilian but still showed a total lack of attacking nuance.

Christian Romero- 7

Romero looked like he was back to his best tonight. A performance full of intensity and composure.

Eric Dier- 6

Solid, strong and but nothing outstanding, a typical performance by the England centre-half.

Clement Lenglet- 7

One of his best games in a Spurs shirt, looked defensively sound and calm on the ball. However, he seemed to get frustrated and lose his head before getting replaced by Ben Davies.

Ivan Perisic- 5

Another poor performance by the Croatian, after failing to impress on the weekend against Arsenal. I don’t know if he is playing through an injury/fatigue, but he does not look sharp at all.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg- 6

Another solid performance by the Dane but he failed to provide any meaningful contribution in the final third.

Rodrigo Bentancur- 6

Progressed the ball well, as usual however his final ball flattered to deceive.

Richarlison- 5

In my opinion, it was Richy’s worst game in Spurs shirt tonight – lacklustre and poor on the ball, hopefully he can sharpen up for the weekend.

Son Heung-Min- 4

I think Sonny’s hattrick against Leicester has hidden a lot of underlying problems this season. Son does not look sharp at all, struggling to link with his team-mates especially when it comes to the final ball. Major improvements needed from the South-Korean.

Harry Kane- 5

A frustrating night for the England captain as he was marshalled well by the Frankfurt defence. However, Harry clearly wasn’t wearing his shooting boots tonight as an all-firing Harry Kane would have easily buried one of those chances.

Subs:

Ryan Sessegnon- 6

Bryan Gil- 5

Ben Davies- 5

When Kulu gets back to fitness then Sonny needs to start on the bench and come on as sub which seems to work better for him at this point. If he can’t control the ball then he shouldn’t be on the pitch because he’s a liability with his lack of defensive capacity and inability to win possession in 50/50 situations.
If Spurs would play an additional midfielder and go w two forwards I really believe it will afford us more opportunities to score goals. The three forward formation just isn’t working.

  • TK says:

Not only is the three forward formation not working, but nothing else that involves moving the ball forward is working. Mr. Conte has set things up so that today’s result would come about: 0 x 0. Think that will induce Harry K to stay? Will Richarlison wonder why he came to N17? Hard to get relegated when a club never gives up a goal, but it’s hard to move above mid-table when no shots are on goal after 90 minutes. This is not good football except for a psychotherapist who wants to understand why anyone would set up a team to go for such a result.

Not stupid is that Mr. Conte–so he told us–but too smart by half.

How can you put out three attackers who aren’t set up to attack? It takes a gifted sort of stupidity to accomplish that.

What does the Cont(e) need to do to put the team where it was when it pipped fourth place a few months ago? They surely ain’t there now.

There are some decent players on this roster, but they surely ain’t playing decently.

Save indecency for the dance hall.

  • Drdrums11 says:

Conte’s philosophy is to basically abandon the most important part of the pitch, the f’n midfield! He intentionally chooses to be outnumbered in that area and not look to utilize creativity there. That system is hard enough but when the forwards lose possession so easily it’s just brutal to watch. Kane is forced to come back and play the pivot bc nobody else is able to do it. I guess Conte believes it’s working since he makes no changes to his system…

  • TK says:

I didn’t follow Conte throughout his managing career. I remember him only on those occassions that I was interested in the outcome of some specific kind, so I remember him from Chelsea. Has he used other kinds of formations with depending on the situation of a specific club? You know, where the team actually has a midfield? Or is he basically a one pony show, always trying the same tricks?

  • TK says:

By the way, Omar, can I ask that such threads provide not only player ratings, but a manager rating? I’d wager that would prompt more comments these days.

Today’s manager rating: 3, if I’m generous. A team with Kane, Son, and Richarlison couldn’t manage a shot on goal? Something was wrong with the tactics for this to happen. It’s that or dodgy lasagna.

    Conte rating 2

Poor Bryan Gil. Hustled and bullied off the ball every time. Feel so sorry for him. Won’t see him again this season.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Spurs players seem to be struggling… Poor ball control and passing decisions / effectiveness. We do need a mf creative player as mentioned on VS many times.

  • PompeyYid says:

    From last night I witnessed….

Poor ball control….2 worst Son n Richi
    Poor passing….most of em
    Poor finishing….strikers
    Poor anticipation….strikers.

But there was plenty of heart and endeavour.
1 pt away in the CL very good, but really it was 2 pts dropped.

Return leg at the New Lane next week, 3pts will be achieved.

NEXT, Seagulls down on the Souff Coast, a tight win for me!

  • PompeyYid says:

OH yeah! Gil, good player that he is needs to muscle up, way to light for the PL! COYS

  • TK says:

I remember being ridiculed for suggesting that Spurs desperately need a creative midfielder–told the Conte wouldn’t have anywhere for such a player to play. Right now I’d trade Conte for a creative midfielder.

Vindication for an old knobhead. lol, but…

I’d trade the vindication for a well performing team right now if they were succeeding at Conte’s plan, no matter how circumstances are making the manager look–how shall I put this?–stupid. Yes, Mr. Conte’s stubbornness makes him look stupid.

Bleak is the word in the forefront of my mind for yesterday’s lack of performance.

As to Bryan Gil: I feel for the lad. Finally gets on the pitch and is pushed about like a rag doll and humiliated in public by the manager. Ouch!

  • TK says:

Dare we say the obvious? Poch is unemployed these days. Hire him and back him with signings they way a whole bucketful of signings have come Conte’s way since he arrived. Start with signing a creative midfielder.

Of course, a string of 1 x 0 wins between now and the WC break could easy the mind a wee bit.

  • PompeyYid says:

Reading between the lines here….I get the feeling its “Conte out” already, bloody hell for the life of me give him a chance!

I also get the feeling no matter who was in charge there would still be the moaning minnies,

If you read BS’s post he got it spot on! well said that man! COYS

  • Allan says:

    Pompey
I have to agree with you . I’m far from happy ref several aspects of our game and have been quite open about it . However give the bloke a chance .
You have to admit that Tuesdays game was one of frustration and looking at Son’s face when sustituted he looks knackered . Conte’s ultra fitness style ?
I feel that after last seasons efforts and the start of this season hopes were high but the Lisbon , Arsenal and Frankfurt games have been an awakening and a realisation that perhaps we aren’t as good as we thought we were ? Even in the Marsille game we had to wait for one of their players to be dismissed before scoring !
It is sad that we are reading already of ” this is a must win game “.
Unfortunately teams have worked us out and once the full press is applied the frustrations with supporters shows .
