Plan B: Spurs need to rethink new long-term replacement for key player after bombshell – Opinion

With Hugo Lloris yet to return from injury and Paulo Gazzaniga doing little to show he can one day become the club’s new no. 1, the search for a new starting goalkeeper at Tottenham has quietly been going on in the background.

Yet this weekend brought news that the club, and some supporters, were not expecting as Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel, who Spurs reportedly viewed as a long-term replacement for Lloris according to talkSPORT, revealed that he will be leaving the club at the end of this season, with Bild reporting that Bayern Munich will be his next destination.

Should Tottenham replace Hugo Lloris?

Yes

No

It was perhaps the most logical move for the Schalke keeper to make. After all, the 23-year-old shot-stopper has often been touted as Manuel Neuer’s successor for both club and country as a scout report from Bundesliga.com shows, but for Spurs, it now means that they need to look for a plan B as to who replaces Lloris.

The French goalkeeper has been a mainstay for Tottenham for the majority of the decade, becoming club captain in 2015 and often being regarded as one of the top shot-stoppers in both the Premier League, Europe and at international level, and whilst there could be an extra season or two in the tank for the former Lyon star, a long-term replacement has to be considered by Jose Mourinho.

At 32 and shortly returning from an arm injury which could affect the Frenchman’s ability, a new goalkeeper could be brought in as soon as the summer transfer window, and with Nubel now out of the picture following the revelation that the German youngster will be joining Bayern, Spurs need to again re-evaluate their targets and identify the right man to replace Lloris.
