Opinion: Tottenham’s £27.2m ace can become one of Jose Mourinho’s key assets

|

The deal finally got done in the end and he hasn’t disappointed.

Giovani Lo Celso completed his permanent move to north London after spending £27.2m on the Argentinian midfielder from Real Betis in January, six months after he joined the club on a season-long loan.

Despite being guilty of naivety in the transfer window over the years, Daniel Levy did a good job in getting this deal done fairly quickly and has pleased the Spurs faithful since putting pen to paper.

Our club legend Ossie Ardiles had lots of good things to say about his fellow compatriot and praised his resilience and his intelligence after suffering a hip injury in which he missed eight games and 43 days of action, as per TransferMarkt.

Has Giovani Lo Celso impressed you so far?

Yes

No

All of the above is setting him up nicely to become one of the club’s most important players. Manager Jose Mourinho paved the way for him after he scapegoated Tanguy Ndombele after our 1-1 draw against Burnley, who Lo Celso replaced at half-time.

As I previously said, I don’t agree with the Portuguese tactician’s stance as it could come back to haunt him. However, it will certainly benefit Lo Celso. Having only made seven starts this season, the fans have been impressed with his performances, particularly during our magnificent 2-0 win against Manchester City.

With an average of 1.6 tackles and a pass success rate of 84.1%, his battle-hard playing style has astonished me and is a huge improvement on what has gone before him.

The 23-year-old has illustrated that he is capable of being a long-term replacement for Christian Eriksen, which will be imperative if we are to move forward as a club.
