Opinion: Tottenham would be pulling off a masterstroke with swoop for £45m Manchester City man

|

Manchester City fans may not enjoy this news quite as much as the Tottenham supporters reading this, but the rumours doing the rounds on this occasion relate to the impressive full-back, Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese defender is a top player, but so far this season he’s barely featured.

According to El Desmarque, the Lilywhites have got an interest in the Manchester City defender and Jose Mourinho has personally contacted him as he knows that the 25-year-old is unhappy in Manchester as he’s not been playing, and moving on could be for the best.

There are many factors in place at the moment that could work in Tottenham’s favour for this move. For one, Cancelo will want to be playing at the Euros in the summer, yet as he’s not playing football and his fellow right-backs Nelson Semedo and Ricardo Pereira are, his place is in serious doubt.

Then there’s the fact that it does not look like Pep Guardiola has any interest in instilling him as the club’s first-choice right-back, as Kyle Walker is well and truly Pep’s man on the right of his defence, limiting Cancelo to just 18 appearances and less than 1300 minutes during his City career so far (Transfermarkt).

However, at right-back for Tottenham, the problems are clear to see. The Lilywhites have got Serge Aurier as their first choice option, but the Ivorian is rash and always looks to have a mistake in him, whilst behind the African defender the only options are the lesser fancied Juan Foyth, a centre-back by trade, and Kyle Walker-Peters, who neither Mauricio Pochettino nor Mourinho have fancied.

So, Joao Cancelo then?

No, there'll be better options in summer

With that being said, a move for the £45m rated defender (Transfermarkt) could be absolutely superb from Mourinho and Spurs. The need for a right-back is there, and as a top-quality one could be available, this looks like the perfect move for the struggling north London club.
