Opinion: Tottenham won’t sign £90k-per-week Barcelona man, Spanish reports are false

|

According to AS, Tottenham are interested in Malcom and could battle Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal for the 22-year-old’s signature. Malcom has struggled for form at Barcelona and is expected to be moved on from the Camp Nou this summer.

The £90k-per-week forward joined Barca from Girondins Bordeaux in July 2018 and has gone on to make 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating six goals. Malcom struggled for playing time in La Liga last season, racking up only 608 minutes of football and scoring once for his troubles.

It’s hard to see why Tottenham would be in the running to sign the uncapped Brazilian while he’s struggling for goals and assists, so there’s little chance AS’ report is true. Mauricio Pochettino could benefit from another forward in the squad, potentially to replace Erik Lamela, but it won’t be Malcom.

Tottenham have a more fervent need to strengthen up front before they look at wide players too. If Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen leave as expected this summer, the Lilywhites will only have Harry Kane to choose from next season.

Pochettino needs a striker who can take the scoring burden off the 25-year-old while being happy to play backup for the majority of the season. That is the priority, not Malcom.
