Opinion: Tottenham may have to pay £40m and £1m wages to sign Uruguayan

|

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in Maximiliano Gomez and could battle West Ham United to procure his signature from Celta Vigo this summer. The 22-year-old nearly joined the Hammers in January before the deal broke down due to his wage demands. Tottenham may need to replace Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente this summer, but Gomez won’t come cheap.

Sky Sports say the Uruguayan international has a £43.3m release clause but a £40m asking price and FIFA says he earns £1.1m-a-year/£21.2k-per-week at the Balaidos. That’s not to say Gomez wouldn’t be worth the outlay, however. The centre-forward has scored 11 goals and made five assists in 29 Liga games this season. He has contributed 39 goals in 69 games since joining Celta from Defensor in 2017.

Tottenham are in the market for a new striker as they could be losing two forwards in the same summer. Janssen has struggled for playing time this season and is expected to be sold when the season comes to a close. Spurs tried and failed to offload him permanently in the last two transfer windows. Llorente is out of contract this summer and might not be retained due to his advancing age (34).
