Opinion: Tottenham favourite will struggle upon return to much-changed Mourinho side

|

The state of the current Tottenham Hotspur squad has changed dramatically since the first game that Jose Mourinho took charge of. Of the 14 players used during Jose’s debut against West Ham, only eight of them featured in the most recent Premier League clash against Manchester City.

There are a number of reasons for that too, Hugo Lloris has returned from injury and Japhet Tanganga has had a meteoric rise to the senior team whilst Harry Kane, Moussa Sissoko and Ben Davies have been out injured and Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose left in January.

It’s not hard to spot that a lot has changed, but with one particular man out injured in the form of Sissoko, Mourinho looks to have reformed the midfield, and when the former Newcastle man returns it’s hard to see a way in which he’ll walk back into the side, or get back in at all.

At the age of 30-years-old, Sissoko is not far away from falling off of a physical cliff, and whilst no one wants to see that, it’s quite clearly happened to Jan Vertonghen this season and the drop off has been severe, with it only set to be harder for Sissoko given his reliance on his physicality and the competition he has for a start.

The likes of Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele are quite clearly three of the clubs best midfielders when it comes to lining up in a two-man pivot, and the fact that the three of them are 24, 23 and 23 respectively doesn’t make good reading for Sissoko at all.

Is Sissoko part of Tottenham's best eleven?

Yes

No

Mourinho will quite clearly find a role for Sissoko when he’s back, but whether or not the Frenchman comes back in and can manage to become the key figure that he has been over the last couple of seasons, we don’t expect to see Sissoko racking up 44 appearances across a single season as he did last year (Transfermarkt).
