Opinion: Tottenham favourite has uncertain future, Mauricio Pochettino has difficult decision

|

Fernando Llorente has an uncertain future at Tottenham, with his contract expiring in a matter of weeks. The 34-year-old has become an important player for Mauricio Pochettino during the second-half of the 2018/19 season and Sky Sports believe he could be rewarded with a new deal.

Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sport Witness), however, are touting Llorente for a shock move to Barcelona which seems highly unlikely given his skill set. The Spanish international is a target man who wins aerial duels and holds the ball up for players to join the attack. He’s not a Barcelona-type player.

Tottenham have a difficult decision to make on Llorente. The centre-forward earns £3.9m-a-year/£75k-per-week and might be worth keeping if it saves signing a new player as backup to Harry Kane. On the flip side, Llorente isn’t getting any younger and may not be as effective in 2019/20.

The fan-favourite contributed 13 goals in 34 games this season, averaging a goal or assist every 70 minutes. He’s been a useful impact player since the turn of the year, featuring in 16 of Tottenham’s last 18 Premier League games and six of Spurs’ previous seven Champions League outings.
