Opinion: Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy have a problem with £34k-per-week Tottenham man

|

Vincent Janssen could be on his way out of Tottenham after falling down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino. The 24-year-old has struggled for form and playing time over the last two years, making just four appearances in all competitions, but Pochettino and Daniel Levy need to decide what to do with the Dutch international this summer.

Janssen is surplus to requirements at Tottenham – Pochettino has said as much throughout the course of the season. He made three substitute appearances at the end of the Premier League campaign, but that was likely because Janssen was often the only attacking player on the bench to choose from. Should Tottenham strengthen this summer, it’s hard to see Janssen staying.

Selling the 24-year-old could be tricky, however, as clubs won’t pay the necessary £10m for an out-of-form player. Janssen has scored only six goals in 42 appearances for Tottenham and only netted five times in 18 games at Fenerbahce (on loan). He’s struggling for confidence and wouldn’t represent value for money until his performances and goal output improved.

Levy will be desperate to get his £1.8m-a-year/£34k-per-week salary off the wage bill, but interest is sparse. Real Betis, Schalke 04, Cardiff City and Burnley have all been linked over the last 12 months, but there isn’t much talk of them returning for the striker this summer.
